The “Art” Of Detective Rocke

Jak Kovatch is a noted painter, printmaker and sculptor. A longtime Westporter, in 2013 he earned the town’s “Lifetime Achievement Award for Art.”

Recently, several of his paintings, etchings and lithographs were stolen from his home.

The Westport Police Department quickly solved the case. With the help of New York City cops, they also found the works themselves — not long before they might have been shipped and lost.

Kovatch asked “06880” to thank the Westport police — particularly Detective John Rocke — publicly. “Their additional follow-through on this case for me was unexpected and very much appreciated,” he says.

The artist is thrilled. The art is now back home. And the art of crime-solving is being applied to a new case, by our fine Westport Police Department.

This diptych by Jak Kovatch was one of the items recovered by the Westport Police.

Hello Jak – greetings from your former, long-term neighbors, the Crowthers. I thought you’d like to know that Mom and Dad are doing well in Fairfield, and we girls are still close by. We often drive past our old homestead and we continue to cherish the 35-years of memories that accumulated there while we were your neighbors. It was hard to see the physical changes made to our house after we sold it but we’re glad that a portion of its 150 year old core still stands within the center of the many new additions made to her after we left. It’s also comforting to know that YOU are still there, holding your own, and still creating great art.

Thank goodness that your artwork, through good police work, was recovered and returned to you. Best of luck going forward. Say “hi” to the old house for us.

    • Wendy,
Just saw your note to us today.
Thank you so much for your thoughts. We will be out of our house by the end of June. Must move. What an undertaking!
      Best, j.
