I was at Fresh Market on a recent Friday evening, I tried unsuccessfully to pay with Apple wallet from my phone. It was not going through.
I had no wallet or credit cards on me, and store would not take the credit card number that was on my phone.
Feeling unsettled, as 10 minutes earlier I had received news a friend passed away, I just wanted to get home with the groceries to my family.
The woman behind me offered to pay. She said I could Venmo it to her.
Alas, my phone had been upgraded the day before. Venmo not yet active.
She said, “That’s OK, you can pay me later.”
Then generously — without asking for my name or contact info — she paid $60, and said I could Venmo when I got home and set up.
I am grateful for such kindness and trust among strangers, in a difficult moment.
