Bruno Guiduli Sports Green

Bruno Guiduli has 2 passions: soccer and sustainability.

They seem like separate worlds. But the 2022 Staples High School graduate has managed to meld them together.

In the process, he could be at the cutting edge of helping change the way the entire sports industry looks at the world.

Okay, that’s a bit lofty. But the Macalaster College senior has a knack for doing important things, in a big way.

As an 11th grader in 2021, Bruno raised $3,000 in one day for a national program for players with intellectual, physical or emotional challenges.

At college in Minnesota — where he is majoring in international studies and French, and minoring in geography — he founded, and is president and coach of the club soccer team.

During a semester abroad in France he interned with an organization combating racism — and worked with the famed Paris St. Germain club to limit racism in their stadium by analyzing fan behavior.

Among Bruno Guiduli’s many accomplishments: He was an All-American runner for the Staples track team. He’s third from left, with (from left) Samir Mott, David Sedrak and Jalen St. Fort. (Photos/Barry Guiduli)

Most importantly – for this story at least — Bruno founded Macalester’s Green Athletics Club.

It’s one of the first college clubs in the country to combine environmental sustainability and athletics. They design initiatives, promote environmental awareness in sports, and bring the athletic and sustainability departments closer together.

Macalaster is “very progressive,” Bruno says. But there was a big gap between its sports programs, and the way the rest of the school operated.

For example, concession stands used plenty of non-recyclable materials. Bruno helped get the athletic director, facilities manager and head of the sustainability department together. For the first time they talked about how each operated, and looked at weak points in their systems.

The Green Athletics Club has advocated for the use of environmentally sustainable sports uniforms, and examined stadium management (to limit the use of lights, protect the grass, limit water runoff, and use compostable materials).

Bruno hopes to recruit one representative from every varsity and club sport as “green ambassadors.” So far, men’s and women’s rugby, golf, swimming and frisbee are on board.

Last fall, Macalaster hosted the Upper Midwest Sustainability Conference. Bruno has networked with like-minded activists at other schools, and sports organizations in the region.

Bruno’s club is part of the Minnesota Sustainability Sports & Events Coalition, which works with major Twin Cities facilities.

Club members have met with representatives from Minnesota United, the Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves to learn how they implement sustainability initiatives into their operations, and ways to improve them.

Bruno Guiduli urges Macalaster to recycle.

Bruno has learned that while the University of Minnesota is very green — their stadium is the first college one to be LEED-certified — the University of Wisconsin athletic department follows its own (not very sustainable) guidelines, apart from the rest of the school.

“Sports have a huge platform,” Bruno notes. “This is a great way to spread the message about sustainability. People want to get involved in the environment. This is a great opportunity to do it.”

“And athletes are role models. If kids see athletes doing a cleanup, they might want to do it too.”

Bruno graduates this spring. He’s figuring out what comes next. After his semester in France last year, he did environmental work in Portugal.

“I might like to do that with a soccer team there,” he says.

Bruno Guiduli can find sports connections all over the planet.

He just wants to make sure there is still a planet, in the future, for every sports team.

Roundup: Real Estate, Balducci’s, Youth Sports …

Some interesting real estate statistics, courtesy of KMS Partners @ Compass:

Between January 1 and June 30, Westport’s total volume of single-family homes was $493,710,999. An additional $17,508,061 worth of condos and townhouses was sold.

That’s a 78% jump from 2020 for homes, and a 141% increases for condos/ townhouses.

The number of sales (267 for homes, 28 for condos etc.) represents rises of 34 and 87%, respectively.

The median sales prices of homes ($1.575 million) and condos/townhouses ($493,000) are up 30 and 4 percent from 2020, respectively.

Single family homes were on the market for a median of 33 days; condos etc., 65.

The most expensive home sale recorded last week in Westport was 10 Gray Lane, off Sasco Creek Road. It fetched $10 million.

There are changes cooking at Balducci’s.

The gourmet grocery store is changing 3 of its 6 registers to self-serve.

Staff members have been asked to stay Tuesday night, to work on the store’s remodeling. A source says, “No one in the store knows what that will be.”

Last fall, Acmme Markets bought 9 Balducci’s stores on the East Coast. They said they would not change the name — or the quality of the goods.

Weston resident Ed Whitley is global head of content partnerships for Bridgeman Images. They represent over 2,500 museums, galleries and artists around the world.

He had a great — and pleasant surprise — yesterday, at Weston’s inaugural Art Fine Arts Festival. One of his own contemporary artists — Ben Bonart — exhibited.

Yesterday’s festival included Weston’s own José Feliciano, in his first live performance since the pandemic struck.

The Weston Fine Arts Festival continues today, through 5 p.m. on School Road.

Speaking of sports: Two soccer events yesterday highlighted the importance of the game for all youngsters, regardless of physical or mental disability, or socioeconomic status.

Staples High School boys team tri-captain Bruno Guiduli continued his fundraising and awareness campaign for TOPSoccer, a national program for players with intellectual, physical or emotional challenges.

Bruno began his efforts in November. He brought his specially made goal — with the “O” in “TOP”soccer cut out — to Wakeman Field. Four hours later, his total raised passed $3,000.

A couple of hours later at Cesar Batalla School in Bridgeport, 1999 Staples High School grad — and former MLS pro/national team player — Kyle Martino unveiled his Over Under Initiative.

Martino designed a goal that converts any basketball court into a field for soccer, street hockey or handball. It’s easy to set up, and — through his non-profit foundation — will provide access to added recreational opportunities for millions of underserved youth.

The Cesar Batalla court is the first in the nation. Martino was joined by Bridgeport superintendent of schools Michael Testani, coaches and players from Beachside Soccer Club, and — of course — a ton of eager kids.

Youngsters play at Cesar Batalla School’s new multi-sport court. The soccer goal can be pulled out of the ground, then sunk back into the ground, with ease.

Add one more local name to the list of 2021 Emmy nominees: Michael Lonsdale.

The longtime Westporter is up for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Variety Series or Special. He was the production mixer on HBO’s “David Byrne’s American Utopia.

And finally … happy 82nd birthday to Dion DiMucci. Known just by one name, Dion made his mark as a doo-wop singer with the Belmonts.

In 1968 he shifted gears, recording a song memorializing 4 slain American heroes: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.

Dion is lucky to have made it past 19. In early February 1959, he was part of a star-studded “Dance Party” tour. When asked to spend $36 on a flight from Clear Lake, Iowa to the next stop, Dion said no to the extravagance. He took the tour bus.

The plane crashed, killing all on board: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.W. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and pilot Roger Peterson.

Townies Scavenge The Town

The Townies know Westport.

The Townies — specifically Marcy Sansolo, Darcy Hicks, Jaime Bairaktaris, Melissa Kane and Julie Buoy Whamond — took first place in the Adult Division at CLASP Homes’ Un-Scavenger Hunt last weekend.

With creativity, humor, and an uncanny knowledge of Westport history and culture, a few dozen teams deciphered clues. They then took photos and videos of themselves at some of the town’s iconic locations: the Compo Beach cannons, Toquet Hall, Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge and more.

Townies and friends, at the original YMCA.

The Townies had a great time doing it. They also won a boat cruise on Leigh Overland’s 42-foot yacht.

They were followed by Team G (Wendy Griffiths; Dragone Motors private tour); Connect Westport (Debbie O’Keefe, Deborah Casey, Kim Sherman; dinner for 4 at Bartaco); Sill Scavengers (Neil Markman; Eric, Nicholas and Noelle Stine-Markman; Lillian’s boat cruise); The Merry Marys (Mary Lou and Chuck Roels, Mary Surette; Bruce Katz Family prize of $250), and ARGenovese (Ariel Genovese, Tim Proctor).

First place in the Student Division went to Team Guiduli. Led by Bruno Guiduli, and fellow Staples High School soccer players Matthew Jordan and Aidan Mermagen, they earned the Leader Family $500 first prize.

Two other Staples soccer teams snagged the other 2 top spots. La Tortuga (Lucas Carpi, Chase Watkins, Jeremy and Eli Rosenkrantz, James Corridon) won Burt’s Trees’ $300 prize; Santi Alfageme, Avery Mueller and Nate Fridland captured Burt’s Trees’ $200 prize.

Lucas Carpi (lower left) and his team.

Darcy Hicks — a Townie team member — said, “This scavenger hunt was more than just that. It was what we needed after this year — all of us. You have no idea what a gift it was.”

One of the clues was about all the famous bands like the Doors and Cream that played at Staples.

The event was a fundraiser for CLASP Homes. The organization helps people with autism and intellectual disabilities lead full, meaningful lives. The lead sponsor was Keller Williams Luxury.

Several teams made touching videos, for CLASP clients. Others held up signs ofo support.

Organizers hope to make the Un-Scavenger Hunt — there was no time limit, just a premium on fun — an annual event.

Roundup: Candlelight Concert, Dead Fish, Gingerbread Houses, More

Staples High School’s 80th annual Candlelight Concert will look nothing like the previous 79.

But it will still look very cool.

Yesterday, “06880” described this year’s COVID format: a livestream on December 19, with recorded performances and intriguing interviews. (Click here for details, and a registration link.)

Staples senior Brandon Malin was the lighting director for last weekend’s taping. It was a professionally produced event, as befits the music department’s traditional, beloved gift to the town.

Here’s what it looked like, when the masked, socially distanced musicians arrived:

Dead fish continue to pile up on the shores of Compo and Old Mill Beaches.

They’re bunker. They form large colonies, deprive themselves of oxygen, and die. It’s unusual though for it to happen so late in the season.

Patricia McMahon composed this grim but natural collage:

Who doesn’t love gingerbread houses? But who has time to make them?

Members of the Westport Woman’s Club, that’s who.

They’ve created 20 gorgeous (and non-edible) houses for a special fundraiser.

Click here to see all of them. For a $20 ticket, you’ll be entered in a random drawing. It’s a great way to help the Woman’s Club fund many worthy projects. Tickets can be purchased at the link above; in person at the club (44 Imperial)Avenue, or mailed to the above address.

Bruno Guiduli is a key defender on Staples High School’s soccer team.

But this winter, he’s scoring — not preventing shots. He’s shooting on a small cutout banner in his yard. By scoring 2,020 times, his “goal” is to raise money and increase awareness of TOPSoccer, a nonprofit that embraces children and teenagers with intellectual, emotional and/or physical disabilities. Players develop at their own pace, in a safe, fun and nurturing environment.

Bruno has set up a page for donations, while he shoots. Funds help special needs players participate. “No one should be turned away due to financial challenges,” he says.

“Soccer has been a source of competition, challenge and discipline,” Bruno says. “It has taught me the value of teamwork and reaching a goal (no pun intended). So I want to help kids of differing abilities reach their goals. and experience a similar love for the game as I do every day.” Click here to donate.

Dave Briggs is a pro.

The former CNN, Fox News and NBC Sports anchor’s Instagram Live interviews (@WestportMagazine) are consistently compelling and clever.

And I’m not just saying that because I’m his guest today (5 p.m.). Check us out!

The other day, Nile Rodgers testified before Parliament. The world-famous singer/guitarist/musician/arranger/producer told British lawmakers that streaming platforms should pay musicians more. He said he realized the situation when COVID curtailed his touring.

I’ve never been inside his Saugatuck Shores home. But if the Daily Mail photo below of his testimony — livestreamed, of course — was taken there, it’s got some pretty impressive decorations. (Hat tip: Mark Mathias)

And finally … today marks the first night of Hanukkah. Don’t let the light go out!
