Lynn, Great picture!
Margaret Rudkin, founder and owner of Pepperidge Farm, lived and owned that property you see. At one point the property was sold and large homes were built on the property. I visited one home maybe twelve or fourteen years ago. I might be mistaken about the exact year, but I do recall that the house was gorgeous. I can recall a beautiful picture hanging on the wall too. I’m pretty sure that photo is the property I’m describing.I used to drive by there on the way to the Patterson Club decades ago. If I’m mistaken, I’m sure someone will point it out.
Pretty sure that particular property was not part of Pepperidge Farm, being owned by Everett Banks when Maggie Rudkin’s family sold Pepperidge Farm in the early 1980’s though I suppose it is possible they previously sold part of the property to Banks. I believe her property started adjacent to the north and can be seen in the background. Her estate was buried in the middle of the property and is still there.
The Banks family was on Merwins Lane. My uncle, Ed Kirik, bought property and developed a street called Fair Oak Drive around 1958. His land bordered the Banks property and my cousins took riding lessons on the Banks property. Banks and Rudkin’s property were close to each other, but not the same property.
yes. it is on the way to the Patterson club but it was a dairy farm before they sold off the upper land for houses
My family belonged to the Patterson club, early 1960’s (until my parents’ divorce,1975, ‘serious golfer’s (my late parents,Frank & Jane Pomerantz, my older brother,Jeff,(he still playing, these days..my sister & I not so much:-)..I always loved this photo of the barn ,Sturgess Highway;, I’ve not seen this in many years.d (My brother,Jeff recently : ‘The Patterson Club these days looks Completely different, but that’s always part of Westport.’ (we could always see Patterson Club from Merritt Parkway between Exit 42 & 44)
I e-mailed my cousin and this was his response, “ He was Nate Banks….his cousin was Emerson Burr.
Nate’s son Sam owns the the property/barns…house everything. Still lives there and boards some horses there “
I’m shocked that Nate Banks cousin was Emerson Burr from the Fairfield County Hunt Club! Also, Carl ( Scooter) Swanson’s mother was a top notch golfer at The Patterson Club. She might have been a pro golfer too. We were members in the late 1950s.
