  1. Marveled at it for years. Just magnificent. Ahh nature!

  2. David J. Loffredo, I couldn’t respond to you because I reached my limit of three responses with the last post. But I don’t dislike or have any animosity with current residents of Westport. And a few things you stated are actually inaccurate. I’m not going to get into the specifics, but my comments have actually been humorous in nature. There’s four people who pay too much attention to me. I’m allowed my own opinions and when the Post Road has 60 For Rent or For Sale signs on one road, that’s not the sign of a healthy town. I just pointed out the fact that property values are declining in Westport and it’s not even in the top three most desirable towns to live in now in Connecticut.! Greenwich is # 1. And to end this comment on a positive note, that tree is really cool. That’s a great picture.

Jack, I don’t want to ignore your comment because although we’ve yet to meet, I respect you and your family’s contribution to a place where I spent almost 30 years.

I appreciate your historical context on Friday Flashbacks. I have a ton of childhood memories, and you do a nice job of filling in things I missed or no longer remember. I think most people do. Under the context of Friday Flashbacks.

I passed through Wepo recently and drove past my three former homes. The town is under constant evolution. That’s what happens in vibrant economies. But the bones are still the same. I continued on to our home in Maine, a town that hasn’t changed a bit since we bought the land more than 40 years ago. Old locals love that it’s unchanged, but all the young people are gone because there’s no progress, no prosperity, no future for the next generation.

I’ll trade my memories of Fur Fin and Feather for a meal at the Whelk anytime. Yes I know they’re in different parts of town.

You’re not wrong about the real estate challenge but you’re missing some of the math. Private kindergarten in the city can top $60K per kid. And it only gets worse. So the NYC to Wepo with school kids trade will always work. You could buy a $2M home, put two kids all the way thru Staples, burn the house down, and still make money.

Where I see the massive disconnect is perceived real estate values in today’s interest rate environment. Post financial crisis, Obama printed money for 8 years followed by Trump for 4. So a ton of homeowners have sub 4% mortgages in a world where 7% is the new norm. That hurts home values, but it’s not unique to the 06880.

You won’t see bargains in Westport, most owners can afford to hold, but it’s happening almost everywhere else. Nashville, hottest market for a while, now has 2.4 sellers for every buyer, a Redfin record apparently.

TL;DR – play nice, don’t fight with current residents, save your stories for Fridays.

  4. David, Thanks for your complementary response and you sound like a great guy! I do the same thing when I visit Westport and it’s a strange feeling to drive in neighborhoods I lived in when we “ party lines.” (1950)
