Many miles from our northern neighbor, the Westport Fire Department urges residents — especially children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions — to limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
Air quality is at unhealthy levels statewide, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
They’ve issued an Air Quality Alert through tomorrow (Thursday), due to elevated levels of fine particulate pollution. Forecasts indicate air quality may worsen Thursday, with conditions ranging from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy in Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties.
“Smoke from these wildfires is affecting air quality throughout our region,” says Westport Fire Chief Nick Marsan. “We encourage residents to pay attention to how they feel, reduce outdoor activity if air quality is poor, and take extra precautions.”
Westport Emergency Management will continue monitoring conditions in coordination with the EPA, DEEP, and the National Weather Service, and will provide updates as needed.

The planet may be burning but Westport will always be cooler than anywhere else (according to Westporters).
Interestingly, Dan posted the chart for ozone (not fine particulate or PM2.5 levels). But it’s a happy accident, since our ozone levels are also often bad too. Last summer, CT residents had 21 days where ozone levels exceeded the 8-hour daily maximums and people should have been warned. This year, we are on track to match those numbers. Why aren’t our town officials sending out notices when the ozone is bad? In some ways, ozone is much more insidious, because we can’t see the ozone, so parents don’t know that they should keep their kids indoors–whereas we can sometimes see the PM2.5…..It’s time to send out warnings for both types problems.
