“Then & Now”: #14

Most of Dave Matlow’s “before” photos, in this continuing series — showing homes in their pre-teardown state — are of those that were in good condition.

Ttoday’s images show 2 that were not.

Here is the latest collection of houses that no longer exist, and what replaced them.

  1. Often the “after” is quite an improvement aesthetically.

    I like the before better!!

    • Me. too, John. I really miss the simple beauty of that Mansfield Place house, not to mention the old Westport elegance of the Gorham Ave cottage. As Joni sang “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…”

      • I grew up in that house(moved there in 1964) and my mother lived there until 2006. It’s too bad the picture wasn’t taken before it was partially demolished.

        • The house on 9 Mansfield Pl.

Brian- I live in this home now. Though we did not tear down the original. That was coastal construction. We are the 2nd owners. Moved in July 2010. Would love to see more “before” photos! The door to the original house is still in our basement. I’d love to repurpose it someday.

          • Carrie, feel free to shoot me an email at btcrane@optonline.net and I’ll be happy to share some old photos with you. By the way from this photo it looks like your garage is about where my kitchen was looking out over a rock garden and acres of woods. Also about 20 feet closer to the road from the front corner of your garage was a very tall evergreen that gave beautiful panoramic views or Long Island Sound if you climbed to the top.

I miss many of the old ones. We lose the diversity of design from different eras. Thankful one of my Dad’s early designs seems pretty much intact. The Black Barn house at Patrick and Wilton Road.

More examples of Westport losing its original character

Yes, that’s deceptive. The Mansfield Place house
was old, but didn’t look like that when we sold it. That pic was during demolition.
