Staples Players Rewind: “The Music Man”

In 2001, David Roth kicked off his second year as Staples Players director with a surefire favorite: “The Music Man.”

His troupe did not disappoint. Today “06880” offers our audience — those who saw it, those who missed it, those who were not here and those who were not yet born — a chance to relive its high-energy magic.

Former Staples High School media teacher Jim Honeycutt taped all of Roth’s shows. Now, he’s selecting highlights to share with our readers.

  2. Bravo for the second time- 25 years later!!

And- Thank you again to Mr Honeycutt and Dan for the delayed encore performance.

  3. Lovely? Absolutely. Thanks to Dan and Jim, undoubtedly high up in the impressive ranks of town treasures. Oh!! And of course David Roth and the enduring Staples Players program. So much talent and caring commitment in this town. I remember when theatre director Al Pia retired, and I wondered what would become of that special Staples program. Never should have doubted.

  4. Back in the early 1960’s, I joined a small band at Burr Farms Elementary School, which was organized by Mrs Whitely, a school parent, drawing from the rudimentary instrumental music program and students who were taking private lessons. In the spring of ’63 (or maybe it was ’64), we were asked to participate in a production of “The Music Man” in the Staples HS Auditorium, as the “Boys Band” formed by Professor Hill. We learned the screwed-up version of the “Minuet in G” provided in the score, but in performance, it sounded “too good,” so we were asked to play more wrong notes! This was my first experience on the Staples auditorium stage! (Marc Bailin, you were there, too!). Looks like “The Music Man” was still a hit at Staples decades later!
