Minnesota ICE: The View From The Ground

After ICE agents killed a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, residents reacted in many ways.

Some protested in the streets. Some delivered food and supplies to immigrants, who are afraid to venture outside.

Josh Resnik went to a Somali restaurant.

The 1988 Staples High School graduate has spent over 3 decades in the Twin Cities, working in the food industry. He knows that the gesture was small.

But it meant an enormous amount to the owner. Her business has suffered as Somali customers fear going out.

Resnik and his son Eli — a high school senior — headed to lunch as a protest unfolded nearby. The owner — in the US for more than 30 years — waved to the protesters. Some later stopped in for a meal.

Somali restaurant owner waves to protestors outside.

Josh and his son also visited a Mexican restaurant. Those owners now keep their doors locked, so ICE agents won’t enter. But diners can knock, and be let in.

Those are 2 small examples of the personal toll the events of the past month have taken on ordinary citizens.

Resnik lives in south Minneapolis, 2 miles from many of the protests.

Daily life, he says, is “weirdly normal for a lot of us. There’s a heavy dose of white privilege.”

But neither he nor anyone else can escape what’s going on.

“There’s an amazing sense of community,” Josh says. ‘People have really come together. They’re not afraid to stand up and speak out. In the darkness it’s very powerful for people to say, ‘This is not who we are.'”

Protestors (left) and ICE agents (right) in Minneapolis.

Immediately after the shooting, schools were closed. When classes resumed, ICE agents chased someone onto a high school campus. A few students and teachers were pepper sprayed.

Remote learning has been offered to students who don’t feel comfortable going to class.

A friend told Josh that one of his Hispanic employees has been pulled over 8 times, because of his dark skin.

It’s not only immigrants. The Black employee of another friend was detained. “This is like 1960s Mississippi,” Josh says.

Between the George Floyd protests in 2020, and this, “We’ve been through a lot here,” Josh notes. “People are shaken.”

Josh believes that President Trump has targeted the city and state.

“He wants violence, to prove the need for ICE. They say ‘if you follow orders, there won’t be a problem.’ But this is so purposefully provocative. The agents arrived here in force, with minimal training.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have urged protestors to be peaceful. “Don’t fall into ICE’s trap,” they say.

Throughout the Twin Cities, people like Josh Resnik continue to do whatever they can, in ways large and small.

On Saturday, Josh and some friends gathered to watch a football game.

Instead of wings, they ate takeout from a Somali restaurant.

  1. The humanitarian side is horrific. How did we get here. The state seems to be overrun by bad state politics being toppled by bad federal politics? More importantly, how does this get prevented from happening again. On top of it all, when they are done investigating, if they find the embezzlement fraud number to get up to 15-20 billion, they will lose federal funding for all programs and the much needed tax paying citizens living below the poverty line will suffer immensely. What a mess.

  2. What a shame Biden and Democrats opened the border and caused all this suffering. Now it’s Trump’s fault for cleaning up the mess. Profound utter stupidity.

    • If you recall, a border bill was proposed by Senators Langford (R) from OK, Sinema from AZ and Murphy(D) from CT. Then trump pressured McConnell to squash it so he had something to run on. Facts matter.

      • Think TF conveniently misremembers when facts don’t fit his narrative.

      • Biden opened the border. Facts matter Susan. Don’t beg the question.

        • Michael Pettee

Is that how you explain the deportations of Cuban immigrants in Miami who have been there a long time, since way before President Biden?

The elderly Hmong man in the news who has been here for a long long time (Vietnam war ended April 30, 1975), and who is a US citizen – the one who got perp-walked in his undies – this is Biden’s fault? Really?

You don’t suppose it might be because they are not white, do you?

          • Not white OK
            Any color illegal NOT OK

You’re up to 15 comments on this thread. The rule is 5. You either think rules and probably laws don’t apply to you, you suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder or both.

Now tell me to pound sand and shout “TDS”.

S.4361 – Border Act of 2024, was introduced on 5/16/24, 40 months into Biden’s 48 month term, and TBH clearly only introduced as a response to voter polling in the run up to the imminent election.

    • That is certainly what Fox News would have you believe. But Minnesota is clearly being targeted – fewer than 1% of the illegal immigrants in the US reside here. Even if you believe that we need to get tough on illegal immigration – there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. And what is happening in Minnesota right now is the wrong way. We should all be aghast at the untrained, armed thugs of ICE that have come in and are attacking mostly innocent citizens. There is no due process, there is extreme racial profiling, and there is unnecessary violence. Fox News will also have you believe that the Somalis, other immigrants, and protestors “deserve this” because of illegal actions of a few. First off, to say that all Somalis are bad because of the alleged child care fraud is like saying all white people are bad because a few have shot up schools or other crowds. But also, the xenophobia and anti-immigrant feelings that have been building are awful – our country was Made Great because of immigrants, not in spite of. And from a humanitarian perspective, whatever happened to loving your neighbor? – not categorizing whole races as “illegals”. This issue is very personal to me. I have worked closely in the food business with many in the immigrant community in Minneapolis for 25+ years. And I have befriended tons of hard working, wonderful business owners and others who want to build community here. Get to know people and you have a much more in-depth and empathetic perspective. I am happy to report that most residents in Minneapolis have stepped up in very vocal support of the immigrant community and against the un-American practices of ICE.

      • fewer than 1% that can be calculated, and how much of the blatant fraud – and fraud matters esp when it’s federal funds that could have gone to USAs and our legit intl guests who use it as it’s been approved for – that so far has been calculated ?

I think you suffer from some vision of NIMBY in sense that you might not rely as much on federal funds so if a group of emigres steals it, grossly – and I do mean grossly – misuses it, you really don’t care because it doesn’t impact you at all, (if you were really deeply more empathic, civic minded it might, but it seems you are ‘A – as long as it’s not in my yard/house, etc. – NIMBY)

This is such an important document of all that’s happening. I am horrified at what’s happening. Thank you for writing about this. I will amplify. How else are you sharing this story?

Mr. Feely, You have your voice but I’d iike to say that after listen to it wine and in these very dark times in America there is no tolerance for your voice (are you going to blame Biden for your tooth ache too?) – everything you say seems to stand for hate, division, violence and in this post ethic cleansing, your voice seems to support hurt, harm, every isms I can think of and everything that harms, hurts, kills & causes suffering in our World. It seems you agree with the formation & use of a Gestapo against, a formation that the orange man formed over 40 years of recruiting the underbelly of American citizens devoid of purpose in life, given one in the name of devotion to the furor, all joining the hate & killing machine we now see before us. Democracy has no room for your voice.

    • Ms Linda Montcalvo
Geeez. Another lib who knows what I’m thinking. Could you please copy paste some of those terrible things I’ve said so I could explain or apologize. That would be nice.

  5. Apparently, Democracy has no room for voicing facts.

imagine an ICE visit to 06880 restaurants? building sites nail salon. massage services. construction projects automobile services. The immigrants are demonized but what about all the employment staffing companies and business people that hire undocumented? These issuers can be solved in a reasonable bipartisan manner. Our government has failed to act on both sides. it’s only been a year. Can it get worse ? Can it get better ?

    • you’re confusing: immigrants WITH refugees WITH Illegals WITH immigrants who commit fraud on immigration apps that then mistakenly – hopefully mistakenly and not intentionally – get approved. (dan generously gives us 3 posts max, this confusion you’re generating or just stumbled into is important enough and so rampant to use up 1 of the 3),

all immigrants are not refugees, all approved immigration apps are not legit IF they were filled with esp intentionally incorrect purposely misleading info in order to get approved

  7. Mr. Feely – you want facts? How about this one… ICE agents are now violating patient care and privacy. How? By entering patient’s rooms and literally HANDCUFFING them to their beds! You don’t believe me… fact check it! Crazy enough, they are allowed to be in the public lobby. But entering a patient’s room or care ward – requires a judicial warrant!! And they don’t have them. Because they are goons who have bloodlust! Who are the illegals now???

    • Oh no😱
I believe you. The illegal they handcuffed. What was his crime? That’s a need to know.
I’m sure they occasionally violate laws as they chase criminals. That happens when you chase the bad guys.

  8. Phillip Perri

It’s interesting that federal law enforcement is operating in the majority of all 50 states (yes, including Republican led states/cities) yet the only problems and protests are in Democratically controlled cities. Why is that? In non-sanctuary cities politicians and local law enforcement cooperates with the feds and the people under detainment or found to be criminal illegals are handed over to ICS at the jails or courthouses, negating the need to track them down in the street. In sanctuary cities politicians and local law enforcement refuse to cooperate and release the criminals onto the streets, forcing ICE to track them down and arrest them. This policy creates a danger to all parties involved and has created the spectacle played out on TV. All a performative decision by the leaders of sanctuary states/cities for their own political agenda. Facts matter.

  9. Reading the responses to this post has made me think folks might find M. Gessen’s recent opinion piece in the New York Times (“One Year of Trump. The Time to Act is Now, While We Still Can” 1/18/26) a helpful analysis of the dire straits we are in. Things are really bad, all over.

    Link to Gessen’s piece:

  10. Slightly tangential, but the convicted mastermind of one of the fraud schemes is a white woman

  11. I saw the videos of the killing of Renee Good many times, and each time I am convinced that Jonathan Ross should be investigated and persecuted for his actions. More importantly, I have lost trust in ICE and the Trump administration in keeping our neighborhoods safer. You just can’t send ICE agents who have no clue how to handle similar situations properly. If the goal of the Trump administration was to make the streets safer from the most serious criminals, then they have failed epically.

  12. I received an anonymous tip that ICE from Connecticut is heading to MN and bounty hunters are being recruited for sign bonus. Thank you ICE and President Trump. If you see something say something report to DHS. I bought 4 sandwiches for ICE last Monday.

  13. reading this thread makes me very sad.

  14. David J. Loffredo

It’s frustrating that with so much brainpower on this blog, everyone digs into partisan politics. I’ve been guilty as well.

Biden intentionally opened the southern border. It’s well documented by groups who still claim to be Independent. It cost the Democrats an election, even with the Hail Mary, May of 2024 Border Bill. There are at least 10M people running around this country that we didn’t process thru any channel. The real number is most likely way higher.

Trump has unleashed ICE, and the process is a horror show. Too many innocent long term “residents” are being swept up in this mess. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I am endlessly amused by what’s mostly angry white women battling federal agents. If you plotted sex and race against law enforcement interactions. they probably fall to the far bottom left. You don’t see a lotta black dudes picking fights with heavily armed militia.

Someone needs to study why Minnesota matters. I’m gonna guess that less than 1% of the 06880 has ever ventured there, yet historically it factors into more than just George Floyd and Renee Good. Fascinating.

Debate better, makes reading this more valuable. Tone down the vitrol.

Affluent White Liberal Women. The new White House talking point to distract us from the multimillion Epstein documents the president and DOJ have broken the law by failing to release. Extra! Extra! Read all about it:

I’m trying to find some middle ground on this thing, not a rage post, my family came thru Ellis Island in the 1910’s.

Everyone goes sideways on anything remotely political. If you’ve ever travelled internationally you know how restrictive borders are, the fact that we opened ours up might be unprecedented.

          I don’t click on links.

          • stephanie Frankel

so then why pardon Jan 6 insurrectionists and why not go after Trump who is a criminal, fraud, and pedophile himself? Too rich and powerful? Do you actually listen to the police and people of MN or just a punk kid named Nick who wants to be famous for the likes of Kyle? What about Renee? You happy about her head being blown off?

            • David J. Loffredo

We can all do the whole whataboutism crap for days. Below are just a few of the most recent illegal alien arrests, all waltzed right in under Biden.

I don’t love some of what ICE is doing, but sometimes go you’ve gotta break some eggs…

              1) Charlotte, North Carolina: Julio Cesar Xocop-Vicente, an illegal alien from Guatemala, was arrested for a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 15-year-old girl in November 2025.

              2) Brewster, New York: Santos Paulino Vasquez-Ramirez, from Guatemala, was charged with homicide and robbery after allegedly strangling a taxicab driver to death in December 2025.

              3) Texas: Three Venezuelan nationals who were released into the U.S. were charged with capital murder for allegedly shooting and killing a man at a motel in 2025.

              4) Illinois: Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, from Mexico, was charged with concealing and abusing the body of a missing woman, Megan Bos, found decapitated in a storage container in 2025.

              5) New Mexico: A member of the violent Tren de Aragua gang, Carrascal Campo, was arrested in January 2026 and charged with strangling a victim and burying their body in a suitcase.

              6) Texas: Gildardo Amandor-Martinez of Mexico was accused of killing a 15-year-old boy in 2025 while attempting to rape the boy’s mother.

              7) Florida: A Cuban man with a prior removal order and convictions for murder, kidnapping, and carjacking was apprehended in October 2025.

              • Stephanie Frankel

Add Donald Trump to that list and LOCK HIM UP!!!

                • David J. Loffredo

If he’s on the Epstein list, absolutely. Each and every one of those bastards.

Must be quite the list tho because the Democrats had complete control of it for four years and didn’t release it either.

  15. Lauren Macneill

Susan Farley, Tom Feeley and Philip Perri, you are all 3 buying right in to the MAGA talking points, demonizing immigrants and completely missing the point about freedoms and rights, yes even of the people who are not yet legal US citizens , but many of whom are “doing the right thing” , trying to “come here the right way”. Some are refugees escaping brutality and working their asses off in this country. You are supporting a fascist dictator – he is unlawfully attacking US citizens, seizing foreign governments and threatening to take a nation because he wants it. The similarities to the lead up to the Holocaust are very clear. Immigrants are the new Jews. If you are buying in to that you are complicit.

    Some facts for you –
    – Blue State Minnesota has 130,000 unauthorized immigrants
    – Red State Texas has 2 Million, Red State Florida has 1.6 Million
    – The invasion and brutality is happening in Minn. not the red states
    – Despite the MAGA playbook, there aren’t riots and burning cities down (this is getting very familiar) there are peaceful protests as we are allowed to do by law.
    – When Peaceful protestors are being executed in the street – or even the “she shouldn’t have been there” that’s Fascism.
    – Anti-fa is ANTI Fascism. If you’re PRO-fa then just don’t pretend anymore and wear the Fascist symbols you’re so proud of
    – ICE is an immigration agency – and they are being deployed as a secret state police force with no training. They are masked. A few yrs ago they were wearing ICE windbreakers and badges. After all being here undocumented is not a criminal offense. Its civil.
    – ICE is now kidnapping women and children, and by their own account 85% have ZERO criminal record. It’s not about criminals.
    – They are showing up at their work places (so not about them not working), using their tax records to find them (so not about them not working or paying taxes), showing up at courthouses (So not about them doing this the right way), refusing them due process (so not about the constitution), spending an obscene amount of money (so not about the economy) and doing all this in the name of a convicted felon who is currently not following the law.

    • David J. Loffredo

Way to not make it instantly political.

Also Texas and Florida are border states / entry points – so your analysis sucks and I stopped reading after that.

      • Lauren Macneill

David, I’m replying to people – so not sure how I turned it political ? And isn’t that what the article is about. Also, thank you for pointing out that those red states ARE entry points and border states – wouldn’t that be more reason for the ICE gang to be gathering there to stop all this big bad criminals? Or do they prefer to go after Minnesota and attack women and the elderly.

  16. Ryan Heemeyer

Oh, the irony is thicker than a Minnesota winter blizzard. These same folks who were all “law and order!” and clutching their pearls over Jan 6th, screaming about defending democracy and respecting federal authority are now out there blocking ICE vans, chanting against the feds, and basically turning Minneapolis into a standoff zone because, what, Trump’s back in charge? Guess “upholding the rule of law” only applies when it’s the other guy’s goons storming the Capitol, not when federal agents are enforcing immigration policies you don’t like. Hypocrisy level: expert. But hey, at least the Somali takeout solidarity is still going strong, priorities!

    • stephanie Frankel

so why were Jan 6 insurrectionists pardoned and why is ICE not going after Trump who himself is a criminal and pedophile? Is it only poor brown people? And why the SS look? Why the cruel behavior, Why so many agents? Why the low educated and non experienced bigots doing this? Does this all really entertain you and make you happy?

      • Ryan Heemeyer

Stephanie, let’s cut to the chase with facts, not rhetoric.
Jan 6 pardons: Trump fulfilled a promise using presidential power, similar to how Biden pardoned Hunter and others. You decry it but ignore left-wing precedents.

ICE not targeting Trump: He’s a citizen, not their jurisdiction. Calling him a “criminal and pedophile” without convictions (hush-money case ended with no jail; Epstein ties are old, denied, and unproven) smears like baseless accusations against others. Your selective outrage ignores Biden family scandals, Clinton-Epstein flights, is pure hypocrisy.

“Only poor brown people”? ICE prioritizes criminals (70% arrested have records), but scale affects Latinos due to borders. Yet you overlook how sanctuary cities (often Dem-led) shield criminals, enabling harm to minority communities.

SS look/cruelty/many agents/bigots: Tactics are for efficiency in deporting 1M/year with expanded force. Does the face mask, OCP pants, and plate carriers scare you? They’re standard in federal law enforcement, not just ICE.
“Bigots”? Broad-brush insult, like labeling all critics as “racists” or “anti semitic”. Cruelty claims ignore humane alternatives rejected by open-border advocates.

Entertains me? No, just facts. As for your hypocrisy, many progressive like you bash U.S. enforcement while supporting Israel’s strict borders and deportations. Why the double standard on sovereignty?

  17. Michael Pettee

I live in Saint Paul. One son is on the staff of the Minneapolis City Council. Another son, a daughter and their families live in Minneapolis. I also happen to be a first responder. I grew up in Westport.

    – It is really really bad in the twin cities.

    – ICE agents are thugs. they are not behaving like, nor are they proper law enforcement officers. I would wager a bet that most real law enforcement officers are appalled at what they see.

    – News flash: I think it’s about 91% of the Somalis here are actually full US citizens. ICE has no more jurisdiction over these people than they do over you or me. IMHO: this has frustrated them so they have switched their focus to the Central Americans in Minnesota.

    – People with black skin and brown skin get picked up. Even Native Americans. Indiscriminately and with no other probable cause. By and large these are not criminals.

    – First-hand example: A baby, an American, gets nourishment through a port in her abdomen and needs oxygen and morphine as well. ICE abruptly deported the father. The baby-sitting auntie is abruptly in ICE detention. Baby’s mom fearful of further ICE deportation action. No where to live. Again, the kid(s) are US citizens.

    – People with brown or black skin can not go out of their homes. AT ALL. Not to work. Not to school. Not to the store. These are solid members of the community here. They pay taxes. There has been a tremendous groundswell of support in the Twin Cities of people packing hundreds, thousands, of boxes of food, toiletries, and other basic supplies, and delivering them to these people who cannot venture one inch outside their doors.

    – As it happens I am in Paris just now for three weeks. Locals here are disgusted and appalled that the bright light once held by the statue of liberty is now extinguished. Questions people here ask me: “What the heck is going on?” “The man is really crazy, isn’t he?” “Will countries start to drop out of the coming LA Olympics?”

  18. Dermot Meuchner

The US is a mafia state. Just out in the open now.

  20. stephanie Frankel

The police of MN are publicly calling out the racial profiling of ICE. Why is that ICE leader wearing Nazi SS garb? Why is there an investigation into a protest at a church where an ICE agent is a fake priest and not into the ICE agent who killed Renee?
How on Earth have humans lost their souls like this? What church or synagogue would promote this vile behavior? Thinks are not blue or red anymore. It is truth vs lies and empaths vs cruelty.
If ICE cared so much about crime, fraud and pedophelia they would arrest Trump.
Tom, get back to your Fox news watching career.
