You just need to care about a hometown hero.
Ben Casparius — the 2017 Staples High School graduate who has had a storybook season since being called up to the major leagues in August — will start Game 4, for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
They lead the New York Yankees, 3 games to 0. Casparius — who has already achieved more in Major League Baseball than any former Wrecker — can help the Dodgers win it all.
Two “minor” points: It’s his first-ever major league start. His previous appearances have all been in relief.
And this will be his first time on the mound in the World Series.
Game time is 8 p.m., on Fox.

Ben Caparius, with the National League Championship Series trophy. Will he win an even more important one tonight?

Ben looks like Jeter. Holy cow. We keep hoping the Yankees find their footing again for the Series. We are Mets fans first however.
Whooo whooo!! So exciting ! Best of luck ❤️
Not a baseball fan and certainly not a Dodgers fan, but I hope Ben pitches a perfect game tonight. What a thrill for him and for Westport.
i remember Ben at Earthplace.. we called him Big Ben! what a thrill to watch him.. what a wonderful opportunity for him!
Rooting for LA as a Red Sox Fan- anyone but the yankees.
On behave of BoSox nation, SWEEP the pinstripes, Ben!!!
So proud of you.
Scooter, I made a comment about the Patterson club on yesterday’s post. My cousin knew your mother! Read it, if you would. Now with that said, I am ALL IN rooting for Ben! I watched the first three games and I was thrilled at what I saw. I think that grand slam in the bottom of the 10th with two out and the Yankees up 3 to 2 mentally CRUSHED them. Arrogant Soto seems devastated and I hope Ben can end the season tonight!!!
I did read it and thank you Jack. Few remember that the manager of the Dodgers, Davey Johnson, made a pivotal steal for the Red Sox to keep the 2004 pennant series alive and the biggest collapse in history. GO BEN!!
Dave Roberts I believe you mean.
I
Indeed, me bad. Davey Johnson, I believe, managed the Orioles at one time?
And after that steal, Papi got a base hit to score him. And then the Red Sox crushed them in game 7. I think they scored 8 runs in the first few innings.
What a fantastic opportunity for hometown hero!!
In baseball lingo today, the starting pitcher is called the “opener” in a “bullpen game,” when no pitcher is expected to throw more than a couple of innings for that team. The load usually borne by a starting pitcher is planned to be shared among several relief pitchers. (Who warm up in the “bullpen” area, by longtime baseball naming convention). The Dodgers came into this series with only three healthy starting pitchers, not the usual four or five. There is no starting pitcher in the usual role tonight, but an opener, who takes the first turn. So fearless young Ben is the opener in tonight’s bullpen game for the Dodgers. Wishing him success, but always rooting for a seven-game series…
As one of my first graders, Ben was always determined to achieve his goal. Continue tonight and may success be with you!
To think that he only first made it to AAA this year and was first called up to the Majors in August. What a spectacular rise to the top! Hope he strikes out the side in the opening inning.
Freddie Freeman Has scored more runs than the entire Yankee team! Think about that.
Freeman has scored three runs in three games, the Yankees seven. You seem to be referring to something different, runs batted in. That’s baseball! Anything can happen in a series or part of one.
In the first three games, Freeman and the Yankees have the same number of runs batted in, seven. You were speaking directionally, not factually, as the politicians say.
Bill, Freddie Freeman has more home runs and RBI’s at this point than the entirety of the Yankees for this World Series so far!
Jack, you could look these things up. What you’ve said about runs scored and RBIs and home runs wasn’t true before Tuesday night’s game, and it’s far from true after that game. The box scores are available online. It’s a shame that so many are now in the “well, I just disagree” frame of dealing with inconvenient facts.
Bill, I made my comment at 7:50 pm yesterday and my comment was parroting what the announcers stated! He had more home runs and scored more RBIs at that point so said the commentators! As a matter of fact that statistic grew when Freddie hit that first inning home run. Looking back, Ben had a sensational outing and I would like Dan Woog to invite him to next year’s Compo Beach party! Yesterday I could have gone to DC to the Harris rally, but we chose to watch the World Series. Game 5 is tonight. Go Dodgers
Oh and a cherry on top of Ben’s wonderful night… his mom’s birthday today too!
I have Ebbets Field bleacher seats, that my dad got when they tore down Ebbets. So I’ll root for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and hope the New York team survives tonight.
I cannot root for either team. Being born in Brooklyn, I was raised to hate the Yankees and love the Dodgers. And when the beloved Dodgers broke my heart and moved to LA, I could no longer love them. Besides, who in Los Angeles ever dodged a trolley?
But, now living in New England, I am a rabid Red Sox fan!
Before being the Brooklyn Dodgers and after being the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, they were the Brooklyn Robins.
Of course other inappropriate names caused by teams moving are the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers.
Fox showed a graphic that said Ben in only one of two pitchers in the history of baseball to make his first ever MLB start in a WS game. Ben has now given up just one run in 6 1/3 innings in the post season, leaving tonight’s game after two innings (as planned) up 2-1.
it’s exciting to see a local person to reach the highest level in baseball. Congrats to Ben and everyone who helped make him the star he is
As a former Bronx resident and now a Westporter for 30 years; I am a Yankee fan always!
