Rotarians Seek Help For Helene Victims

Westport’s Rotary and Sunrise Rotary are joining other clubs in Connecticut to help another Rotary group in western North Carolina, as it aids victims of Hurricane Helen.

They’re asking “06880” readers to help too.

Two members of the East Hampton Rotary Club have donated a 50-foot semi-truck, and a 26-foot box truck, to transport collected materials.

The collection is set for Tuesday (October 8, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Westport Stop & Shop).

Items needed include:

  • Canned or packaged food with a long shelf life (especially cases of ramen, pasta and rice)
  • Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels and plates, plastic utensils, feminine hygiene products)
  • All types of batteries
  • Pet food and cat litter
  • Shelf-stable milk
  • Bug spray
  • Baby food, diapers, formula
  • Hand-held can openers
  • Disinfectant spray
  • Over-the-counter meds
  • First aid supplies
  • Sports drinks
  • Water (low priority)

Other items that are not available at Stop & Shop, but still needed, are:

Tools and equipment

  • Heavy-duty extension cords
  • Small generators
  • Gas & diesel fuel (many residents are using their own equipment to push through roads, and are running out)
  • Bar and chain oil for chainsaws
  • 2-cycle fuel mix for chainsaws
  • Chains and sharpeners

Other essentials

  •  Car batteries
  • Propane
  • Hay
  • Starlinks
  • Cots, tents, sleeping bags

Medical Supplies

  • Tourniquets
  • Medical scissors
  • First aid kits

Once items are collected Tuesday at Stop & Shop, the trucks will be driven directly to Asheville, then distributed by the Rotary Club there.

North Carolina needs help. Westport’s Rotary Clubs are answering the call — with help from the rest of the town.

Instead of telling lies and dancing on the stage with the Orange woman abuser, how about if he gives 2 billion towards aid relief. 2 billion is like $20 dollars to people like me.

    • Jack Backiel

I think I wrote that wrong. 2 billion is like $20 dollars to the #1 Trump fan!

      • Jeff Arciola.

Real stupid comment. How about Harris/Biden give more money to NC then to the victims in Lebanon!
Think of this. We have 3 of the 4 military branches in NC and why did it take so long to deploy them. Well Kamala won’t do a press conference so we won’t know.

I live in NC and have many folks that are trying to help and getting turned away by FEMA. True fact.

The emergency supplies where used for illegals true fact.

Jack I know you live in an all white Rich liberal town but you have NO idea what’s going on outside your bubble. What’s the worst thing you worry about gas leaf blowers being used. Wake the hell up!!

The people lending a hand don’t care who is a republican or democrat. They care that they are a human being.

God bless all families ans rescue workers.

We can say God in NC Jack. It’s ok.

did you read the Charlotte Obsever editorial today ?? it advocated for Trump to stop lying about hurricane help and that Trump should be ashamed of himself for so much lying Citizens believe the outrageous falsehoods Trump says and runs with misinformation.

          • Richard Fogel

the Charlotte Obserber editorial title was Same on Donald Trump for making NC Helene Tragedy Worse with Political Lies.

        • Dermot Meuchner

How about stop sending our tax dollars to fund wars all over the world Mr. Arciola? You’re fine with that but not to people getting shredded by bombs.

        • Jack Backiel

Jeff, I commented on Musk because a week or so ago he pledged 45 million a month to help get Trump elected. That money could be spent in North Carolina because Trump bragged during one of his trials he could be fined a million dollars a day for 10 years and still have plenty of money! He must be worth billions and billions of dollars to claim that! So I stand by my comment!

What is the point of your comments? The Westport Rotarians and other FFC Rotarians are trying to provide assistance to the the affected NC residents.

Just another failed attempt at attention.

Thank you WPT and Sunrise Rotary.

As one who grew up in Westport and retired here in Western North Carolina, just a few miles south of Asheville, we are grateful for the help. We have been helping neighbors and sharing what is available. To give you some “color”, I posted this a few days ago:

Last week at this time I was working on preparing an Elderberry mead, preparing my annual Treasury report for our upcoming HOA meeting, getting started on volunteer work for Conserving Carolina, preparing in various ways for upcoming travels. Life was good.

Then it started to rain. Almost 2 feet in 36 hours. Along the way, water and power stopped, and very quickly it became evident that this was an unimaginable disaster all around us as trees fell, roads began to collapse and…lives and livelihoods were ruined and in the worst case, lost. My day to day concerns were quickly forgotten.

A week later and still no power. Neighbors with generators are beginning to run out of fuel. Water has to be boiled to kill any bacteria that may have accumulated.

But here in my immediate neighborhood, spirits remain high. Got hot showers at one neighbor and my first shave in a week. Our immediate neighbor has provided us with a lifeline from their generator to keep our food cold and phones charged.

We have propane for the barbecue, boiled water to drink and local supermarkets and gas stations, while limited, are open. Road closures are whack a mole as crews work tirelessly reestablishing poles that snapped all over the region. Help is showing up everywhere in the form of free meals, water and emergency supplies.

And the weather has been a godsend, staying in the 70’s every day since, low 60’s at night, with little to no rain forecast for the next week.

Asheville is devastated, Chimney Rock obliterated. Anything along the many rivers in our region is either severely damaged or worse. Neighboring Tennessee was also hit hard and I-40 which connects us looks to be out of commission until possibly next year.

I have been on the Outer Banks during a hurricane (read about it if I ever get to writing my book, foolishness at its highest level), felt -40o in Chanute, Illinois, survived snowfalls and ice storms of epic proportions, but rain like this surpasses any of these events.

It’s going to be a difficult process. Asheville took decades recovering from the Great Depression to become a world class destination now has lost so much.

Only time will tell what sort of Phoenix will rise from this disaster. Only time will tell if people will be able to rebuild and reestablish their lives. Asheville with its homeless population…I pray for them. This was our Katrina and I while I remain hopeful, this sucks.

    • Dermot Meuchner

I am truly sorry for the devastation all of you faced Les have suffered. Mother Nature is extremely upset.

      • Richard Fogel

        it’s called global warming

        • Ricard, Donald J. Trump has three words for you: DRILL, DRILL, DRILL. Global warming is a hoax!!! And from my last comment, everyone knows he could pay a fine of a million dollars a day for 10 years and still have plenty of money!

          • Richard Fogel

America will deserve what America gets

            • Jack Backiel

Richard, This is my 5th comment, so it has to be the last. As you’re well aware, there’s no more FEMA money because it was all spent housing inmigrantes in fancy hotels. There’s also no oil in the oil reserve because Biden emptied it to keep the price of gas low. Between Trump & Musk, I want them to give 8 billion dollars to disaster relief. Combined they should be worth 1.7 TRILLION.

                Jack,
U DA MAN!!! Global warming is a hoax. Climate change is real. Richard is the real deal. Bowling in Westport stopped being cool right about the time your family got out of the business. I’ve never dropped a bowling ball on my toe but when I do I know a really good chiropractor but he doesn’t take Medicare. I don’t need no doctor cause I know what’s ailing me. All I need is my baby I’m coming down with the misery.
