“No one stops at the stop sign on Long Lots Road, near the High Point Road hill.”
“People always disregard the ‘Do Not Enter’ sign on Wright Street.”
“Put a page on the town website, listing all construction work, road work, tree work, cable work, etc. Prevent bottlenecks before they happen!”
Those are 3 of the more than 1,850 suggestions, comments, complaints and ideas posted to an interactive map of Westport.

Screenshot of the interactive traffic safety map. Orange is a “thumbs-down” icon; gray is for “idea,” while the few blue icons are for “thumbs-up.” Seems like the only place in town without a traffic issue is Sherwood Island State Park.
Among the most popular subjects: sidewalks, crosswalks, stop signs, traffic lights, left-turn signals, speed humps, and roundabouts.
The brainchild of the town’s Traffic and Pedestrian Task Force, the map was developed by consultants Tighe & Bond. The project — part of Westport’s Safe Streets & Roads for All Safety Action Plan — went live in February.
Comments are now closed.
The task force has been processing the public input, examining motor vehicle and pedestrian accident data, and pinpointing overlaps between those records and areas of concern.
Results will be presented at the next public information meeting, this fall.

Or a genius idea.
(“06880” can’t solve Westport’s traffic woes. But we sure can report on them. And we do — often — along with every other aspect of town life. But we need reader support! Please click here — and thank you!)

When was this available to suggest areas of concern. Dont remember ever knowing about this
I wrote about it 4 times: once in February, twice in April, once in May: https://06880danwoog.com/?s=%22safety+action+plan%22
So it seems that speeders, red light and stop sign runners are part of the problem. I wonder what the consultants will come up with to remedy that?
unfortunately you can’t control people. I walk a lot I see many drivers going so fast blowing past stop signs and at times barely stopping The drivers are diverse. speeding mothers with children in car. Students driving around Staples parking lots on their parents expensive vehicles with total disregard to pedestrian and animals. it would be so easy for the police to stop this The police could post undercover cars at Staples parking lots and north Ave plus side streets. I walk keeping in mind the recent incident of pedestrians struck on Imperial Ave. what happened there.? Why did a large prestigious car strike pedestrians on the sidewalk ? texting? Drug interaction ? Medical emergency.? Westport is a very smart town full of kind decent people. I don’t know nor understand what happens wheb these kind smart decent people get behind the wheel. Slow down.
Funny that you only call out the women and the teens. What about the men in their Jeeps/ Broncos/ Rovers sitting at the turning light on their phone and looking up at the last second, making in through just as it turns red, leaving 8 cars behind them that couldn’t turn? Or the many, many workers (landscaper/ construction/ you name it) flying down residential streets while kids stand at bus stops. There are so many groups exhibiting bad behavior.
it’s not funny. I agree. I’m not the greatest writer. if you go back and read my comment it said it’s a diverse group. I agree with you. I drive on Roseville going 35 mph and people ride up my bumper often. I’m always conscious of deer crossing
And the beautiful new Flashing Four Way Stop Signs on Cross Highway & Bayberry Lane do not prevent people from driving thru the stop sign !!!!
yesterday I saw a poor young women pedestrian who was on the Post Road where the flashing crosswalk is. The pedestrian was one third into the crosswalk. The cars on the further side refused to stop for her to allow her to safely cross. Can a camera be posted there and give tickets to all cars refusing to allow some decency ?
I’m personally disgusted by the many cars flying down left lane (left turn only) on post road west heading towards the bridge then cutting over to right ahead of 50 cars in line on right side of road. You know who you are. Please stop and get in line like the rest of us! There are so many of you. It’s ust rude and makes us wait longer for the green light.
Part of what encourages that rude behavior is large SUVs whose drivers seemingly have no clue where the front of their vehicle is so leave a car length (plus) in front of them while stopped in the line. Next, of course, are people not paying attention and actually moving when the light turns green and the line ahead of them starts moving. And, in some cases, both.
That leaves rather large gaps that are just begging to be filled by people cutting over and, frankly, may not actually slow down the line much for anyone idling in the right lane.
The behavior is easily observable when using the right turn lane off the Post Road on to Myrtle or Rte 33 to the 41N Merritt entrance. Quite often multiple 20 foot gaps in front of apparently clueless SUV drivers.
What about the landscapers who park their vehicles on the road making one have to move to the opposite lane and you cannot see on coming traffic.
Huge point Helen, pickups and vans no longer carry the tools. of the trade. Trailers are everywhere driven by people who are not capable of, or disinterested in, maneuvering them into a driveway. Serious accidents waiting to happen.
let me suggest as a person go has performed service to thousands of homes that homeowners in many instances do not let the service people use their driveway. why ? They might want to get their car out without having to negotiate or asking the service person to move Perhaps a law requiring a homeowner to permit the service company to park in a driveway or unobstructed area may be helpful. Some driveways are large enough to accommodate a service vehicle while others are not. Trucks stop at the deli and block traffic and pedestrian walkways daily. Then there are food delivery trucks all over town that obstruct roadways and visibility. A respect for the delivery business. homeowner labescaoer and pedestrian is needed. Good town leadership is missing.
