“Don’t Touch My Flag!” Golf Cart Political Controversy Escalates

Last month, a reader sent a photo of a golf cart at Longshore.

A large flag, draped across the back, said “Trump 2024 — Save America Again.”

The reader wanted to know why a Longshore employee could drive around the course, displaying a political message.

One view of the golf cart …

Not wanting to jump to conclusions — I’ve learned that lesson — I contacted Westport’s Parks & Recreation Department.

They said the cart belongs to a nearby neighbor — not an employee. I posted that photo, and the explanation, on July 27.

Since then, several other readers sent similar photos. I referred them to that item, emphasizing he does not work for the town.

A couple of days ago, things escalated.

Someone approached the golf cart driver. He’s a Staples High School graduate with a thriving local business. He lives on the Saugatuck River in a home on the private road just off the golf course, a couple of hundred yards from the first tee.

He uses his cart, apparently, to voluntarily help maintain the course.

The other man demanded that he remove the banner.

“Don’t touch my flag!” the driver responded.

… and another.

A video obtained by “06880” does not show either man, but the audio is clear. The man continues to demand the flag’s removal.

“”I will f—ing blow your head apart!” the golf cart driver says, as the man apparently tries to rip the flag off, tearing it in the process. “Who the f— do you think you’re talking to?!”

The other man angrily retorts, “I’m talking to a worker.”

“Don’t tell me what to do!” the golf cart driver — who is most definitely not “a worker” — says.

The very heated encounter ends when, apparently, a police officer arrives.

“He’s gonna f—ing buy me a new one!” the video ends. “Motherf—er!”

According to the Connecticut Centinal — the far-right website that first reported the fight, under the headline “Westport Liberal Got So Triggered By Sight Of Trump Flag on Golf Cart That He Tried To Rip It Off” — the golf cart driver “agreed that if the unhinged liberal replaced the damaged flag with a new one, he would not press charges.

“If the flag doesn’t get replaced, Westport Police have assured (him) that they will address the situation.”

  1. One might be able to tell, from the phrases used by the flag owner in response to the flag removal , just how intelligent is the average Trump supporter…also, would help to have had the name of that “Thriving local business” so that those more enlightened could avoid going anywhere near it.

    • Ah, the old cancel culture liberal playbook. Oh, oh, he disagrees with you so you wanna avoid his business? You finished having your temper tantrum yet. Someone here could support Trump?? OH THE HUMANITY

    • Susan FARLEY

your resorting to ‘I’m going to get you canceled’ cancel culture tactics doesn’t do today’s Democratic National Party candidates any good; (and as a very intelligent and knowledgeable Trump Supporter, I’m good with That 😉

  2. Tolerance is a virtue. Most politicians are slimeballs, the remainder are even worse. Getting so worked up makes no sense, political rivals are a distraction. Save your energy for important issues like Yankees vs. Red Sox

  3. Why not name the Trump supporter? The Connecticut Centinel did. After all, he doesn’t seem shy.

    • The reason I did not post his name – and the reason I don’t post the names of people arrested in my Police Reports – is because this is ultimately a small town, the internet lives forever, and “06880” appears very high on SEO search engines. I don’t want this to be one of the first results that pop up when people search for someone’s name, for whatever reason

It may not be the right decision, but it’s what I’ve decided.

      • Susan FARLEY

I think it’s really nice and considerate of Dan not to name people, i.e., if they want to name themselves they can in the comments and I’m guessing dan would name them in the articles if they requested he do so. there are so many nut jobs out there (and fr these comments I see quite a few borderline ones too), you don’t want to be part of any out of proportion ‘3rd world country like’ reactions out there.

      • Good move Dan🇺🇸

      • If the MAGAt has the courage of his convictions, he’ll speak up. Otherwise he just looks like another dopey Trump sh!t-stirrer.

  4. The “liberal” involved in this incident doesn’t seem very liberal at all. After all, the first definition of “liberal” in Oxford Languages is “willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas”. Regardless of one’s political views the individual’s behavior was not liberal and should not be condoned.

  5. Susan Iseman

The CT Centinal? Perhaps the golf cart guy should go down to the border and help finish trump’s wall- we’re still waiting for Mexico’s check.

    • Biden auctioned off the remaining uninstalled panels for the wall. His people actually stole them. These panels had been court awarded to Texas who planned to install them. Biden regime stole them, and auctioned them off for pennies on the dollar. Thieves and liars vs Peace and Prosperity. I choose the latter. I choose Trump.

  6. Adam Vengrow

One can only hope that the next 3 months remain civil in town and in country. People pick the side with policies most relevant to them, and if we let it lead to violence or animosity, we are going backwards as a society.

  7. Thom Reynolds

A few things caught my attention:
the Trumpy is permitted—as a non-employee—to simply drive around the golf course and do some pro-bono maintenance work? Isn’t there a potential liability issue there if he were to be injured somehow, possibly by a flying golf ball. Could a lawsuit directed towards the town then possibly be filed?
After all, Trump and his minions love lawsuits.
With regard to his very large flag/banner, he obviously proudly displays it. In doing so, I can almost guarantee you that he knew/knows that he’d get a rise out of some people
when he is out and about tooling around the course.
As for the guy who got into it with him?
Not a smart move, although it is understandably somewhat hard to ignore the Trumpy puppet’s proud display of allegiance.
As for what the flag owner screamed when confronted?
Exactly what Trump would love to hear….threats of violence.
I’m far from being a liberal, I simply don’t understand how someone whom I believe is one of the most divisive and dangerous individuals to ever roam this earth has successfully fooled so many millions into thinking that he actually gives a sh_t about them.
    It’s sad, and definitely scary.

    • Why allow anyone to golf without a hard hat and bubble wrap? It’s called assumed risk. Many adults understand the concept.

  8. Beth Berkowitz

The issue seems to stem from the fact that while he isn’t a town employee he presents himself like one. People seem upset that a “town employee/worker” is politicizing his work on the golf course. While no one should touch someone else’s property, this guy, with the flag should either stop volunteering to “work” on public property or remove the flag to prevent further confrontations, verbal or otherwise. The town should request this of the “volunteer worker”. Obviously, this golf cart driver is looking to incite people with a different viewpoint or he wouldn’t be doing it!

    • Richard Fogel

He has the right to piss off people Harris Walz supporters can organize a caravan of golf carts or other similar vehicle with large Harris Banners. What is in the best interest for 06880 and golfers ? kindness. tolerance.

      • Yes they could, but they apparently have more class than to try to provoke their neighbors that way.

  9. Richard Fogel

why don’t a group of Harris Walz supporters rent a truck and place very large Harris Walz banner and drive it similarly ? Is these good for golfers and town residents ?

  10. Jack Backiel

    T. Mitchell made exactly the point I was going to make. There’s a potential massive lawsuit against the town if an accident happens and the driver of the cart is killed or paralyzed in a freak accident. Volunteers like this should be banned even with no political sign.

  11. Seems to me that we should all be able to go to Longshore and enjoy all the amazing treasures we have in Westport without having to be confronted by the decisive state of politics. It is a place to be able to wind down and relax.

I don’t know what the legal ramifications are, but why is a personal vehicle using the golf cart paths, if they aren’t golfing?

  12. Ron Voloshin

i guess the golfer who has trump syndrome didn’t want to smell the flowers and have a nice walk in longshore park.

  13. Dan, I’m actually a tad confused at what the actual story is here: Is it that someone’s first amendment rights were violated? Is it that a person supporting Trump doesn’t actually have full first amendment rights in westport? Or simply that someone could actually be a Trump supporter?

    • I’m not sure why you’re confused. As the story says, a Longshore neighbor has been driving his golf court on the course, while voluntarily helping maintain it; that people have been yelling/screaming at him, thinking he’s a town employee; that he was confronted by one particularly angry person, who tried to take the flag off himself; that the golf cart driver responded angrily in turn.

All of those elements were in the story. If you need further help figuring it out, please let me know.

    • Jack Backiel

Robert Gray, oh please tell me this post of yours is made in jest. Did you ever see a sign on private property that said “NO SOLICITING?” Try soliciting on that property and see how far your free speech rights goes!

  14. Mike Stuttman

If he’s riding the golf cart on the course without paying greens fees, he’s trespassing. If he’s riding an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle on public roads in and around Longshore, that would appear to be a police matter.

I certainly hope the Parks and Rec Dept and the WPD aren’t enabling this behavior.

  15. Werner Liepolt

    Seriously? Sounds staged to me.

  16. Have to wonder how many people commenting here get out of Westport, out of CT, and travel the country. So someone drives a truck with a Trump sign – a candidate you don’t support. Same comments if it were a Harris sign. Who cares. It’s one person. All the legal claims are such crazed hyperbole. This would be similar to someone taking a political sign off one’s lawn, or a “Hate Has No Home Here’ sign. We get to express ourselves in this country and hope people use common sense and taste in how they do it. Whomever approached the person and truck has problems. Sure hope they get them resolved.

    • Well said Mark, except in these parts and on this blog those first amendment rights don’t appear to be equal. Something tells me our esteemed host would have had a very different tone if that driver had a harris flag on his cart, but then again, dan doesn’t pretend to be unbiased. I never thought Bush derangement syndrome would be reduced to just a runny nose.

      • Sorry, but I don’t follow your logic. Because I’m so biased, wouldn’t I “protect” the hypothetical Harris flag person, and post the name of the Trump golf cart driver for everyone to see?

I have no idea what you mean by the final sentence, but don’t worry: Your First Amendment rights are safe here. Continue to post away!

    • Thank you Mark for your intelligent and thoughtful response. Many here seem to forget that, as Americans, we have the right of freedom of speech and expression no matter who they support. I saw a woman recently with a shirt that said “ White Women for Harris”….Imagine the outrage if someone tried to rip her shirt off. Anyone should be free to express their support without crazed censorship no matter who they support! For a Town that touts tolerance….many remain nothing more than entitled hypocrites.

      • Nice false equivalence there.

This isn’t a person wearing a t-shirt or something as completely benign as a bumper sticker or yard sign.

This is a guy driving around the golf course acting in the role of an unpaid maintenance worker so that he can make sure a banner that he has on the back of a golf cart is in the face of all the golf course users.

I get that incivility is a hallmark of being a MAGAt, but to pretend it is something else is willful ignorance.

      • Agreed.

  17. We all need to find a way to live together again. I support First Amendment rights, even when I strongly disagree with someone’s speech. What concerns me more is how we’ve allowed politics to fracture the common bonds that unite us as a community.

This November, the election will come and go, and we will all have to live with the results. Personally, I see the choice as between a dangerous wannabe dictator and a typical politician. However, others see it differently, and that’s their right.

The sight of a Trump banner shouldn’t be so triggering that it provokes violence. Similarly, displaying a Trump banner to incite such reactions is equally wrong.

The real question is, how do we move beyond this so we can live as neighbors again?

  18. Diana Pils Marino

That’s crazy. Do you know how many Biden Harris bumper stickers I see in CT? I don’t go ramming into them. You’re allowed an opinion on your personal property! Do you not know our laws? When I lived in the Dairy Farm area of Norwalk down the Street from Birchwood I had someone walk onto my yard TWICE and rip up my Trump signs. I was furious that anyone could trespass on my lawn and destroy my property because they “felt” it was wrong. I’ve voted for all 3 political parties in my life .. this isn’t about politics. If “educated wealthy” Westporters can’t handle an opinion they don’t agree with … then the town has gone backwards since I moved there in 1974.

  19. Virginia Jaffe

I wholeheartedly agree with Ms Marino. For goodness sake, all the person ripping the flag off the cart did was demonstrate what an unsavory, undisciplined, entitled, spoilt character they are. Do yourself a favor and focus your thoughts on making the world a better place rather than focusing on trying to control others whose beliefs don’t fit your own. Put your fears in your back pocket and leave people alone!

  20. Dan, as you know, I try to steer clear of political “discussions” on “06880.” But, as a retired attorney, I am intrigued by the potential legal issue here.

Some people making comments here and elsewhere have brought up the First Amendment—but I have yet to see someone pinpoint what I think is the most interesting issue here. And, that is, the First Amendment does not guarantee absolutely free speech in all circumstances; and, in fact, there are restrictions, for example, on federal government workers and CT state employees from doing things such as wearing political buttons while in the workplace.

So, my first question is: does Westport have a similar prohibition on town employees? Are teachers, by way of example, allowed to display the the type of banner seen above in the classroom if they support Trump (or alternatively, could they have a banner in the classroom stating: “Trump—A threat to democracy” if they oppose Trump)?

If there are restrictions on town employees, then I think the second question would be: should the volunteer be treated as a “de facto” employee? Because what he is doing and the type of vehicle he is driving seem to make him look like he is engaged as an official town worker.

    • joshua stein

there is also limited forum and not all town owned property is public property where any type of speech can happen at any time. btw the golf cart driver may have mental health or other issues. i think we all know he is not just volunteering in an authentic way.

      • Alex Wennberg

You don’t know that. He’s actually a lifelong westporter who is an excellent golfer, literally grew up on that course, and has helped maintain it for 40+ years. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Thank you for your volunteer service is what you should be saying. Typical of the “new Westport” dan wrote glowingly about the other day.

  21. Brian Strong

Is not “ “”I will f—ing blow your head apart!” the golf cart driver says, ” assault by CT law?

  22. Wanda Tedesco

What is that guy doing on the golf course if he is not a worker!?He is a dangerous man !!

  23. Don Bergmann

I would ask the Town, Parks & Recreation, to tell us what was this individual driving a golf cart within the golf course was doing in the way of “clean up” or other positive activities and if the Town was aware of what he was doing to make the course more appealing and supported his effort. I often clean up trash in Westport and it would not occur to me to combine that voluntary, but desirable effort with a large banner that express a political position of any nature.
    Don Bergmann

  24. Elaine Marino

When Dan first posted about the “Trump golf cart” last month, I commented on an incident in Michigan where a young man driving an ATV ran over an elderly man while the elderly man was hanging a Trump sign on his own lawn. The elderly man survived but the young reported himself to police and then killed himself before police arrived:

    http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/07/25/trump-sign-supporter-atv-attack-joshua-kemppainen/74548440007/

Anyone who thinks “That would never happen in Westport” is sorely mistaken. If you cannot control your emotions and instead choose to angrily confront another person who has a different political view than yours – you don’t belong out in public. This person should have walked away and complained to Longshore management if the “Trump golf cart guy” is driving around on Longshore without permission (I have no idea about this.) The point is: WALK AWAY. Don’t confront and certainly don’t touch the other person’s property.

  25. Toni Simonetti

“I will f—ing blow your head apart.” ???!

There are a many bad behaviors here: impersonating a town employee, trespassing, damaging private property.

The most egregious is the violent threat. I don’t care who believes what, you cannot make this threat without consequence, no matter who you are.

  26. Richard Fogel

does the golf cart have a license plate? If a car was operating with a covered license plate isn’t that an infraction ? From the photo it appears the license plate May be obstructed by the banner. What would happen to a resident driving a vehicle with an obstructed license plate ?

  27. Tom Talmadge

I believe Parks and Recreation should get this “ volunteer “ off of public property. As has been said previously, a law suit in the making.

  28. Carole Schweid

In my opinion, yes, everyone has to right to vote for who they think would be the best person for the job. But, it is difficult to not be upset when we see large signs in public places supporting a convicted felon who admires Adolph Hitler. Carole Schweid

  29. Michael Calise

Not surprised but discouraged to see once again the overt bias against a political position not agreed with. Very different from the hate doesn’t have a home here signs displayed throughout town. Interesting that the individual who undertook the violence of ripping off the sign is not condemned. I know the man who is being disparaged. He’s a superb Westport citizen and I will stand in his corner to defend him any day of the week.

    • There are NO “superb” citizens, Westport or otherwise, who support Trump…this is not “political differences” we are talking about. despite Calise’s lack of knowledge, Trumps 900 page outline of his agenda is that of a dictator and a fascist…this is not Republican vs Democrat as in all other Presidential elections. It is Hitler vs not Hitler and anyone with the slightest allegiance to democracy would not BE a Trump supporter nor stand up for a Trump supporter who is called out.

      • jeffrey stephen arciola

Dan Katz you are a crazy liberal and always have been. And you want to talk about democracy look at what your radical socialist party is doing with democracy.

You come from and all white rich liberal town. Maybe get your ass out and see how bad Americans are suffering.

So, I also know this man and he has more morals and values than you will ever have. Trust me I heard about your morals more than once. I think you had your funny cowboy hat on to tight!!

        TRUMP 2024

        • Susan Iseman

Radical socialist party? And just what are they doing? Please be specific with facts.

      • Susan Farley

Your mentality is exactly what’s wrong with Today’s Democratic Natl Party.

This DNP mentality of prioritising political party over people, making political party #1 priority with the actual wants, needs and preferences of the people falling somewhere way down the list of DNP’s priorities, i.e., THAT political party is paramount, ‘political party is everything, it’s your family’ was a primary tactic of Hitler, Castro, Stalin, Khmer Rouge, Suharto, and now, Xi Jinping and Today’s DNP Leadership. DNP’s now even gone so far as to – Harris’ literally peculiar choice in VP – push policy that USA govt can take a kid away from their parents if the parents – their only ‘wrong’ – don’t agree to sign off on gender reassignment surgery for their teens and pre teens.

people who are too, really blindly political party loyal – and that holds whether they’re pushing DNP or GOP on people using ‘cancel culture’ – are a problem for the whole country. thankfully Trump has for now pushed this out of GOP, i.e., before Trump, GOP (think Cheney and McConnell) had same problem DNP now has of ‘political party is priority over the people.’ DNP needs A Trump, or maybe Trump is exactly what DNP needs to get back to being really liberal not Left, awake not woke.

        • Richard Fogel

trump will be great for woman’s rights His grab woman by the P teachings is exactly what the USA needs.

    • “I will f______ blow your head apart.” Yeah, that sounds like a real “superb Westport citizen” right there.

  30. Tina Torraco

I think all this is crazy. For goodness sake how did we get to this point? There are a lot of people with bumper stickers supporting their political candidates, flags & banners in yards etc…it’s a very sad time in history when we can’t agree to disagree with civility. I used to think we lived in a town of tolerance and acceptance however I’m seeing the opposite and it’s very sad indeed. Do better Westport.

  31. Jack Backiel

Tina, A bumper sticker is on a car you own! There’s no comparison

    • Tina Torraco

Please don’t dissect my words. I believe the bigger point of my comment comes across. Ty

  32. Elaine Marino

Are we really debating the nuances of whether it is appropriate for the “Trump golf cart guy” to drive around Longshore or hang a Trump flag from the cart?

Please focus on the fact that the incident began after one citizen confronted another citizen over their political views, and the other citizen responded with a threat of physical violence.

Both men were wrong but the degrees differ greatly. The citizen who initiated the confrontation needs therapy to learn to control his emotions. The citizen with the golf cart needs immediate mental help because there is documented proof that he threatened another citizen’s life. The police should arrest him for making the threat and confiscate any firearms he may have. I don’t know where this person works but his employer must be informed of this incident. This is a very serious matter even if he didn’t intend to carry out the threat.

WALK AWAY / DON’T ENGAGE: Your life could depend on it.

  33. Robert M Gerrity

    * Sigh * Person here with a Public Administration degree, with the experience of being a volunteer manager of an HOA for 10 years, and a modicum of sense.

Mr. Lib was absolutely wrong & must replace the sign.

However, Mr. Volunteer’s “volunteer service ” needs to be addressed by Westport Parks as, yes, there are LEGAL LIABILITY issues involved, such as law suits & insurance payouts, etc. Westport Parks needs to tell The Volunteer the following:

Thanks for your service but as a volunteer your service still falls under the Town’s No Political Signs Are To Be Displayed By Employees Rule. Therefore, to continue to act as a volunteer maintenance person, we respectfully request you remove the sign when your golf cart is on town property. If you choose not to do so, then we must ask you to cease bringing your cart onto town property. If you persist in doing so, we will have to deem it trespass and thus take appropriate legal steps. The town’s legal counsel has reviewed this letter & concurs. Thank you, again, for all your efforts on behalf of this wonderful town, etc.

As Bette Davis once emoted, “It’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

I would go with the notion that this flag-bearing MAGAt is acting as some sort of public employee, albeit working pro bono. He’s misusing his role to show his support for Trump, and not in a subtle, bumper-sticker sort of way either; what he is doing is very “in your face.”

Unless the place has flipped upside down from when I left, about 50 years ago, I guess that most Westporters must find Trump and his cult followers to be quite offensive, even dangerous, and this fellow seems to be someone who’s enjoying causing offense with his over-large Trump flag. Then there is his offer to blow some fellow citizen’s head off, which can’t be legal, can it?

I would suggest that Longshore tell this helpful citizen, at the very least, to either lose the flag or else stay away. A step further might be to tell him that his threat of using deadly force is unwanted on Longshore premises so that, flag or no flag, he should stay away.

Am I disinterested in making these comments? No, probably not. I despise Trump and his followers. On the other hand, I think this sort of response is both fair and called for.

  35. Jack Whittle

Well, there are a number of ways to tackle this, but I am not surprised to learn that someone in Westport (I won’t assume they live here) tried to tear down [or rip off] a flag or sign supporting Trump. I don’t think most are surprised either, although there are some who will try to justify this behavior in some way or another (“his flag/sign/hat offended me”). Of course, political speech (that includes lawn signs, hats, flags, etc.) is at the very core of the First Amendment.

I suggest tolerance of political or ideological views expressed by others, rather than looking for reasons to defend this behavior.

  36. Richard Fogel

An honest sincere volunteer does not volunteer to promote a political ideology. It is b s to call this situation a volunteer do good deeds to help his community. This is a scheme to allow a outrageous stunt under false pretense of volunteer work. Nonsense. This must be stopped. I can understand the neighbors outrage but it is inappropriate and bad behavior. 06880 is a very smart community full of good people. Trump brings out the worst behavior in humanity by his lies and racist rhetoric. Do the Meals on Wheels drivers place large political banners on their own cars at the senior citizens center ? Do any other Westport volunteers for charity pollute their efforts by advertising their personal political views with similar large banners at town hall? homeless shelter.? church ? synagogue ? school ? Please consider asking the town attorney and our local government to put a stop to this nonsense ? A sincere. decent person volunteers for the only purpose of doing service. I don’t buy the golf cart crap clean up nonsense

  37. After 50 posts- this is just about a pair of jerks looking for trouble. Jerk #1 rides around on town property in his personal golf cart waving a red Trump flag! Jerk#2 takes the bait and tears the flag. Jerk #1 threatens physical harm.

I doubt 99% of us would get into this no matter what your politics.

Where was the conversation- “excuse me are you a town employee? That is not allowed!” Where is the “I am not a town employee and this is my private golf cart!” Where is the” may I have your name – I don’t think this is legal and I am reporting this to park and rec!!” Where is the walking away from physical threats.

Just another pair of jerks who happen to live in 06880 Westport!

  38. This “volunteer” is the same person whose church shares a parking lot with my kid’s preschool. He frequently has cardboard and sharpie signs on his truck with crude pro-Trump and anti-dem messages. Every time I’ve crossed paths with him he’s spewing the same sentiments to other churchgoers. Obviously he is consumed by this political divisiveness to an unhealthy degree and is trying to further fuel the fire. He also parks like a jerk in spots not designated for parking. He’s trash.

    • Jack Backiel

Maybe he likes men who rape and abuse women? Just a guess….

      • You and Katz. Two toughest men on the internet.

        • Jack Backiel

My driver’s license has the word “Veteran” on it. Me and the woman abuser were in the first military draft and my number was 24. Fred Trump paid off a podiatrist to falsely claim the abuser had bone spurs! He skated and I joined. What do you think about draft dodging Mr. Arciola?

  39. If having a trump banner on the back of a golf cart upsets you, you need to seriously evaluate yourself and get a life. In what world is it ok to go up to someone and demand they take a sign down because it upsets you. If you are that mentally and emotionally weak just report him. The man in the cart is a longtime Westporter whom is well respected across town. A wonderful man. OMG his horrible language! Some of you need to get out of the westport bubble. luckily Westport is a safe place, because stupid choices like starting a fight over a banner can go way worse in other parts of the country.

  40. Omgosh, I am crying. I almost lost my husband this past spring. I love everyone now no matter who, what, where, when. Love is the answer. And I’m sure there will be blowback from my pollyanna attitude.

All becomes clear in a crisis. I’m sad our country and our world seem so divided. So so sad. We need to be better. Seems like both guys started acting like jerks to be honest. I love Westport so much and love Dan’s blog. It has comforted me many days these past months praying for my husband in the hospital. The war in this country has to stop. Neither side is great right now. We have to be great as a people. Sorry. We need to come together now.

Remember that great song from the 60s I used to listen to on Compo Beach…What the World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love. I’ll try to upload it here. I loved that song back in the day. Nothing else matters. Sorry if I’m emotional but this fighting on both sides is so evil. We as the people have to heal our country now. No leaders can obviously. I’m done looking for the next great leader. They don’t exist but we the people do.

  41. Nancy Anderson

This is a ridiculous situation. He does not have permission to be on TOWN property in a non town vehicle. Clearly he has issues with understanding appropriate behavior and boundaries. The Trump flag just seals the deal. Why have the police not been notified of his trespassing with a private vehicle on the golf course? It appears to be a legal issue and I am surprised it has not been addressed appropriately. How long has this been going on ? Who is in charge over a Longshore??? Where is the head of maintenance??? It is just bizarre.

  42. Ripping the hood off a Klansman may seem like a good idea, but there are laws, I guess. I wish Westport’s Republican administration would make Longshore safe again—instead of looking the other way while some guy plays fantasy NASCAR.

    • Dermot Meuchner

Klansman hahaha the war mongering party gets upset over a flag.

      • War mongering party? Iraq? Afghanistan? What on earth are you talking about?

        • Dermot Meuchner

Uh, one democrat voted against those wars Ms. Barbara Lee. Now we have both parties itching for WE111 in West Asia and we are witnessing a genocide take place.

          • I find your post confusing.

Iraq and Afghanistan were Republican president responses to 9/11/01 attack on the USA. Bipartisan support.

China is throwing its naval forces at fisherman from nearby countries and is harassing Taiwan. Bipartisan support.

Ukraine was attacked by Russia. Our NATO allies are all trying to keep that war confined to Ukraine. The USA is supplying materiel- no young Americans needed by Ukraine- just materiel.

Not sure what genocide you are referring to but I hope it isn’t the war in Gaza. On a per capita basis comparing the US and Israel- imagine if everyone in in Westport and Weston were slaughtered in a pogrom with over 3000 captured and held hostage by a murderous gang from Canada or Mexico that was bent on destroying the USA. And imagine that gang hide in and under schools, hospitals , houses of worship and then fired rockets into Detroit or Buffalo or NYC.

Genocide is when a country gathers up a group to kill for no reason other than to kill. For example- Sudanese , Armenians or Jews. The USA did not commit genocide in Vietnam, Germany or Japan although a lot of people got killed. Anytime Hamas gives back the remaining hostages, surrenders, stops shooting rockets and stops using the civilians as human shields the war ends.

So if I got any of this wrong please clue me in on what you meant to say. I would especially like to know where you think a genocide is happening.

          • Amen Steve. And Mr. Meuchner is absolutely is referring to Israel/Gaza – take a look any any of his previous posts on the subject to get a flavor for his extreme views.

The irony: by his standard the other wars you point to (e.g. WWII – Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Dresden) would likely be considered genocides, and as a result of these “genocides” he gets to perch safely in his ivory tower and single out Israel with his vitriol, safe from the dangers Israeli citizens face on a daily basis.

I’m sitting here reading all this garbage against a Westport native who’s family settled here in the late 1800’s and helped build this town and wore many hats over the years and this person has done more for this town than anyone (what has the flag snatcher done besides harass and Accost someone) perhaps we might ask which of these people commenting believes they have the right to touch another’s property? This certainly isn’t the Westport I grew up in and it’s sad that this story was even published. But of course it only took on life when the name Trump was involved. Not the fact that the perpetrator accosted the others personal property but the fact that someone has the guts to go against the liberal entitlements and display who he believes is the best choice for this country. And to all you people who think you know so much… let me give you a little history lesson…Trump cannot destroy our democracy because we are not a totalitarian democracy. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, in which the President of the United States (the head of state and head of government), Congress, and judiciary share powers reserved to the national government, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments. But you all have gotten so caught up in the rhetoric that no one stops to find the truths as they are. And to those who keep regurgitating about an employee, what part of he’s a homeowner adjacent to the golf course don’t you get? And who became judge and jury to say he can’t ride his golf cart at Longshore and volunteer his time to help maintain the area? You may want to also know he’s been playing golf and paying greens fees etc since he was a 5 yr old kid so get off all your high horses and keep your hands off other people’s property.

Let’s forget about Trump , liberals and heritage. My comment was about what was reported to happen- see the post below. This was just dumb stuff. One guy looking for trouble, one guy responding to the red flag and the first guy responding with a threat of physical harm (“I’ll blow your head off!”) If this was a pair of middle schoolers they would be hauled into the principals office for a lecture.

      • The flag guy is not your model citizen as some claim to know. He’s just another imbecile like Trump looking for attention. And legally he has no right to drive his unregistered uninsured cart on the roads. When will the Westport police end this before someone who he hits sues the town
