Lynn Miller’s Compo

Whether you live here now, or have not been back in decades, Compo Beach is in your soul.

We think of Compo as never changing.

That’s true.

Yet every day — every hour — is also different. The light, the colors, the scenery are never the same.

Lynn Untermeyer Miller is one of our favorite photographers.

The other day (okay, to be fair: it was the “06880” party), the 1971 Staples High School graduate took her camera to Compo.

The results are timeless. They’re precious.

And they remind us, once again, that wherever we go, our beach is our home.

My parents owned the house on the corner of Sound View Drive and Westport Avenue from 1956 till around 1982. I was four years old when we moved in. Compo Beach is in my DNA. Every day images of it appear in my mind. I long to go back to my original home, so beautifully portrayed in Lynn’s striking photos. Thank you Lynn! If there’s ever a coffee table book of your Compo Beach photos, please let me know!

Lynn was a CIT when I was a senior counselor at Camp Mahackeno. I don’t want to specify timeframe because it would blow a lot of minds. She was cute, fun and talented in many respects. Still is. Lynn has an affinity for Westport and its people that few can match. A coffee table book of her work would be a treasured addition to my home in Cincinnati. Please consider it Lynn.

“…Compo Beach is in your soul…” wow, yes, such a very true statement! These pictures are just right, very evocative of the spirit of Compo.
As a kid and young adult in Westport, I didn’t know how good we had it with Compo… A beach with grass and trees! A beach you can just pull up and park and you’re steps from the water! A beach with outdoor showers available for all! A beach with food available right there!
It really is a lovely thing. I’m not even much of a beach person, but I drove through it nearly daily once I got my license…I do love that place 🙂

There was a CompoBeach song they taught us at Beach School..I believe the last line was Oh Compo we love you… does anyone else remember this? It was from the Mrs Wallup and the Deguese sisters days
