Dear Parks and Rec: Really?
Shortly before moving from Westport in 1974, my family leased a house just North of this site on Wilton Road, for almost 2 years. I can’t remember why, but we used to walk through this small cemetery, maybe while walking to a friends house? It was the first and only cemetery I ever saw of this kind. A few headstones, scattered around with no symmetry. I can’t remember exactly, but the dates we could still read at the time on the headstones were at least 1750’s. And if my memory hasn’t completely failed, I think there were some 1600’s scattered around. I haven’t thought of this cemetery in over 50 years, until I saw this.
Looks just like Trumps wife’s grave. That’s all I need to know about you
Yes, Westport’s oldest cemetery is in horrible condition. The problem with maintaining this site is access to get the equipment needed in, and debris out.
Your right Pete
And it would be awesome to put together a group of volunteers to do a weekend cleanup and do it right
Volunteering , giving your time is important
That’s what really makes a community great
When people care
Maybe the willow medical bldg will allow parking for the clean up and visitors at other times?
Maybe the willows would be supportive to allow the event parking
Also to allow the few others that want to visit to use parking spots out of way
“Rally ‘Round The Gravestones, ye Lads & Lassies”! Book, Musical & Documentary are on their way!
Whatever it takes. There must be a COMMITTEE somewhere in the town organizational structure to take it on (if they are not already supposed to be in charge of it). If not, ask for volunteers. Actually, there must be a State lae or regulation. Ball dropped big time.
BECAUSE — very likely that graveyard contains the remains of F&IWar & American Revolutionary & perhaps War of 1812 vets who are due stones per US law as was the General.
31 years to the Tri-Centennial.
Is there a D.A.R. or a W.P.A. census of the stones in the 1920s & 1930s?
In all my wanderings growing up in Westport, I never got over there.
56 years to the trip-centenial. I only say this because I was a young adult during the bicentennial and am not ready to rush through what time I have left (assuming my plan to live forever doesn’t work out.)
