Smash-And-Grab Thieves Strike Lux Bond & Green

Just after 3 p.m. today, 2 men wearing masks and gloves raced into Lux Bond & Green, in Brooks Corner.

Wearing masks and gloves and wielding sledgehammers, they smashed 2 display cases, then took off quickly with jewelry.

They ran on Elm Street, then fled in a black BMW sedan toward Fairfield, on Post Road East.

Employees retreated to the rear during the smash-and-grab robbery, and had no interaction with the 2 men.

Westport Police ask anyone with information on the suspects to call the detective bureau: 203-341-6080.

Hopefully we are not heading in the direction of many progressive cities, with rampant retail and car thefts and street crime.

This will be a great comments section. It is no secret that there is very little penalty for these criminals. To some extent politicians say its not their fault, they have to feed their kids. Then it happens in your backyard and now what. Sorry to the owners and the workers that probably feared for their lives.

    • I have a 20 year old car. It is well maintained . Nobody probably wants it. If you want fancy stuff , like jewelry , cars , whatever , expect that thieves will always try to steal it unless you can secure it. I’m hearing folks leave their car doors unlocked sometimes with valuables on the seats . If you’re mindful , you wouldn’t do this , right?

It should be a crime to ha e nice things, its not the persons fault that steals it, its your fault for having it. That makes sense

Notorious American bank robber Willie Sutton, who, when asked by a reporter about why he stole from banks, answered: “Because that’s where the money is.”

I cant believe lux bond would have nice jewelry in their jewelry store. Its definitely their fault.

Ummm….isn’t that the sort of logic that says women that wear short skirts are “asking for it”? Breaking the law is breaking the law. /SMH

      • or maybe just don’t steal.

      • Susan, am I reading this right? Your blaming LB&G, the victim? Adam , Ray and Jeff are 100% correct.. Time to bring back law and order.. This is not political issue, simply a right or wrong issue.. and if people cant see the difference than that is the real crime! No different than the anti israel movement

Your report of “very little penalties for criminals” in the United States will make for fascinating reading for those who are actually incarcerated, seeing as how the USA has more asses in stir than any place on earth:

  3. Run fast Gianni…you used the trigger word “progressive” which ignites PDS in selected brain waves. 😱

Won’t the downtown merchants be happy! These individuals were able to luxury shop, perhaps they grabbed a bite prior just a few steps down at their favorite Main St restaurant, all within the 3 hour parking limit!

See Main Street merchants, it can be done.

No reason for snarky comments. The people who work at Lux Bond & Green are wonderful, and probably are feeling very stressed and overwhelmed. Have a heart please.

“EXPECT” thieves to take it-wow. Perhaps we should all wear matching brown uniforms, look straight ahead and say nothing-oh yes, there are places like that…

Can we petition the RTM and WDA to rename the locale, ‘Crooks’ Corner?

  8. This tye of crime will grow for sure now and in the future.
Westport should take at least two officers off of the posts where they direct road and street details where they are providing traffic
control on construction, paving, tree removal and cable pole work and hire a few special resource individuals. The police removed from these non police critical services and post them downtown ”
WALKING THE BEAT – daily during business hours and provide the “physical presence” deterence that this form of policing provides!

  9. Jeffrey Schaefer

Retreat … so sad … this is why this will continue … we need to be on the offense. Armed Police walking the beat and off some of the other BS ‘tasks’ they are assigned is an excellent idea and use of our tax dollars.

Having worked in retail myself, we do NOT encourage salespeople to try to fight off thieves, as we value their lives more than our merchandise

  11. The only solution: Make the price too high.

    • Frank Marrone

I agree, Mr. Vogel. Why when I was a a young man we knew how to make the punishment fit the crime. So as for your “price too high” might I suggest a return to those good old days: Off with their hands!

Earlier today I posted a comment on Westport Journal about this incident, which I repost here:

I am so sorry the owners and employees of Lux Bond and Green were victims of this horrifying crime … and extremely thankful no one was physically harmed.

I am further shaken knowing my husband was walking our dog on Main Street around this same time.

As our our thriving beautiful downtown becomes “A Destination” of the New York TriState area, we must acknowledge there is a price to pay for such stature.

  13. Perhaps more of a visible police presence would help. In old movies one sees “cops walking the beat”. Why not around downtown ? I am guessing these thieves go where they think it will be easiest. So make it less easy, eh?

  14. It’s amazing how many people are politicizing and polarizing this incident. It was an unfortunate event that happened, it could happen anywhere, no one is to blame. How about we all just be THANKFUL that no one was hurt!
