Friday Flashback #393

After a few years in which Fairfield ate our lunch, Westport is back atop the dining scene.

We’ve long been a restaurant town. Old-timers drool over legendary spots like the Arrow, Mario’s and Chez Pierre.

Even older old-timers remember spots like La Normandie and the Townly.

But I’ve never heard anyone mention The Five Little Pigs.

Paul Ehrismann posted this photo the other day, on Facebook:

I assume it’s a restaurant. With a name like that, what else could it be? Certainly not a butcher shop.

Taking a wild stab, this looks like the section of the Post Road where Cycle Dynamics is now, near Carvel. (I’m guessing “a mile east of Westport, Ct.,” refers to downtown.)

But I really have no clue.

If any real old-time Westporter has ever heard of The Five Little Pigs, please click “Comments” below.

I hope we find out soon. Not when pigs fly.

  1. Precursor to Porky Manero’s?

I probably qualify as a “real old-time Westporter” but I never heard of The Five Little Pigs. Maybe “A Mile East of Westport, Ct.” means Fairfield? Interesting that the card uses “Ct.” and not “Conn.” which was standard back then.

I was good friends with Ray LaPlace whose family owned La Normandie. We were friends around 1961. We loved the salad dressing at the Aarow and were friends with the Nistico family.

  5. You have to swipe right or left to see it.

It was at the very least operating in the early 1930s.

It’s interesting they used Ct. for Connecticut. Prior to the post office standardizing on 2 letter codes, most people used Conn.

The building looks like it might have been the “House of Buys.” Sorry to Peter Barlow for not reading his comment on Conn before above posting.

1931 Westport Directory lists “5 Little Pigs Tea Room (Mrs. Lillian Hawley) E State n Colonial Rd GF” – hmmm, sounds fancy!

The building on the right definitely looks like The Flower Basket.

So, the 5 Little Pigs was in the area of the [vacated] Bank of America building, although I am not sure which side of the Post Road this place was located

I’m almost 96 born and brought up in Westport, now living in Calif. never remember those stores. I walked past that area during the 30s every day from Bedford Elementary where the Town Hall is today. I’d guess a butcher shop or a saloon. We had quite a few in those days.
