Amazon Fresh may be stale.
But a new tenant may replace the never-opened “zombie” store at the site of the old Barnes & Noble.
NBC Connecticut reports that Big Y plans to open at 1076 Post Road East — the plaza apparently abandoned by Amazon Fresh.
Before Barnes & Noble, that space was occupied by another supermarket chain: Waldbaum’s.
Big Y — headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts — is the second largest supermarket chain in southern New England, after Stop & Shop.
No further details are yet available.

I love Big Y! I loved Waldbaums too!! Yay.
If true, it means I can get there without hitting a traffic light!
I think Stop and Shop is enough! Why do we need another major Grocery store so close.
Big Y would be a great tenant. We shop there while in Lee, MA in the summers and find it absolutely superb. Westport would be a richer place for having Big Y located here. While it would unfortunately impact Trader Joe a bit, it would provide a price and quality-competitive alternative to Stop and Shop and Fresh Market
UGH
Great news! Stop and Shop will finally have competition again for the first time since Shaws became Fresh Market. Fresh market and Trader Joe’s are not really competitive with Stop and Shop. They serve other markets. Big Y will be great for the town. Can’t wait.
Anything that would mean I can stop going to Stop and Shop is incredibly welcome.
why?
Oh, that would be wonderful!! Crossing my fingers.
You are very lucky. I love the big Y. I now live in the Berkshires and shop at Big Y all the time. We have a specialty supermarket (similar to Balducci) right next door, and the meat, fish, and vegetables are the same quality and cheaper at Big Y. Both Stop and Shop and Big Y have their own gas stations up by me and the discounts are great.
Thank the Lord! Stop & Shop needs some close-by competition to kick their management in gear and improve customer service and operations. Bring it Big Y!
That would be about the smallest big Y around. They used to have awesome sales, buy one, get two free. I don’t see as much in the way of that kind of promotion anymore. But it is a nice store, people can be really good who work there.
Is there enough space & parking for a supermarket in that spot? Waldbaums was there when the population of the area was considerably smaller!!!
We have a Big Y store in Mystic. It’s fairly nice and was remodeled not long ago. There is one very dumb thing they do tho. The carts that they store outdoors are all stored by the exit door and the exit door is locked, so when you want a cart you have to push it to the entrance door which is not close by.
This is the arrangement they came up with while remodeling?
Wait until Wegman’s opens up on Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk. We go to Wegman’s in Columbia, Maryland a few times a week. Wegman’s is the best I’ve ever seen!
This makes me so happy!
The quality control at Wegmans is outstanding! Y go anywhere else will be your question after you shop there for the first time!
one can have a vacation going to all the local supermarkets in a day.
Hmm. It sounds odd that we need another supermarket. Too bad Target won’t take over that space. Would be a nice addition to Westport’s businesses, especially since there isn’t one in close proximity to Westport.
I did hear a rumor that the recently closed WalMart on Connecticut Ave in Norwalk (across where Wegman’s is going up) is going to be reopening as a Target. Just a rumor, but seems reasonable since there’s no Target in our immediate geography and there’s a second WalMart already in Norwalk.
Westport is definitely the Target market, but I would think that space would be the world’s smallest Target.
It will be a relatively small space for a Big Y, but it is a really good supermarket, comparable to Wegman’s. I think it works in that spot. (And I have not understood the Amazon Fresh concept, once they acquired Whole Foods.)
This is what makes Wegman’s so different. In spite of the fact that it has maybe 90 stores, it’s a family run business. There are no share holders because it’s not a public company. For those of you who own your business, you know how you feel about it and how you take care of it! I’ve met Danny Wegman a few times and we have a few things in common. We were both born in 1947, and our fathers were both born in 1918. We spoke about that when he visited the Columbia store. Wegman’s is a different breed. It’s family who own a family business just like many of you do.
I appreciate the sentiment, but when I went into the Shelton/Trumbull Big Y for the first time, my reaction was “just like Wegman’s.”
Great topic-
But these days some of us have so little time to Stop and Shop. I spend a lot of time on Dan’s blog reading about local rumors- that Trader Joe Balducci buys his Whole Food at the most Fresh Market in town. Or that the Big Y in town is why the Wegman and Wegwoman family shop one town over. Or if it is true that you can save a lot in a low Costco warehouse.
I think the smartest thing to do is just stay home read 06880DanWoog.com and Stew over all the grocery shopping possibilities and just get my Peapods delivered from a Fresh Direct service to my home!
