Cecily Anderson’s “Westport Things”

The other day, Cecily Anderson saw a social media post asking for illustrations of “Westport things.”

Inspired, she quickly came up with a list of possible subjects.

Then she went to work.

“I didn’t try to exclude anything or anyone,” Cecily says. “This was just stream of consciousness.”

Cecily is an artist-educator. She’s worked at Bedford Middle School since 2002. In 2013, she was named Westport’s Teacher of the Year. She moved to Westport in 2018.

Cecily is multi-talented. She sings soprano with the Fairfield County Chorale, and leads her daughter’s Webelo troop.

Four photos from her series “Domesticated” are currently yfeatured at Silvermine Art Gallery. Yesterday, she presented an artist talk there.

This morning, enjoy Cecily’s great, diverse bunch of Westport places and “things.”

But if you were going to create your own — assuming you have Cecily’s talent and eye — what else would you include? Click “Comments” below.

  1. Her choices do reflect Westport, but she forgot to include Long Lots. ( I couldn’t resist.)

  2. Stacie Curran

“06880”, Where Westport meets the world, Woog-Workd, Dan Woog is Westport!

  3. Community gardens and without a doubt this Blog! I think also she should include our first responders , our Police , Fire and EMT.

  4. Beth Berkowitz

I would include the train stations and Main Street and church street.

  5. How could I have forgotten 06880? Yes, include 06880!

  6. Joseph V. Vallone, A.I.A.

I love this work of art ! Per Dan’s request, I would include the Saugatuck Train Station, (a train car over the river bridge) the YMCA (the indoor pool) and the Hunt Club (a horse and rider jumping a hurdle).

  7. “06880”; Saugatuck Congregational Church; Greens Farms School; Carvel; Staples Orphenians; Mitchells.

the minute man statue and the cannons statue

  9. Sherwood Island State Park!

  10. Roseann Spengler

I love this !!! even though it didn’t include other readers suggestions. I would buy a copy of the art page.

  11. Just a clerical correction: Westport Historical Museum
….and since I’m here…The Cribari Bridge…ever since i moved here 25 years ago I was always delighted to see the bridge especially lit up for the holidays. It spoke to why I loved Westport. (Shout out to Al)

  12. 4th of July Fireworks! The Compo Cannons! I love this!

  13. I’d include an entitled driver w/ bad parking 🙂

  14. Cecile, first of all, this is very nicely done and, as one reader suggests, you could probably sell prints of these.

If you were to consider adding one row, I would suggest incorporating illustrations of structures that help convey the New England small-town feeling of Westport while simultaneously capturing some of its history. My specific suggestions: the Fitzgerald cottage, the Greens Farms train station, the Westport Bank & Trust Building, and Toquet Hall.

  15. Love! Definitely sitting on a prints/postcards/T-shirts goldmine here!

  16. Calises Deli. Coopers Auto Parts….The Duck.
Still there after all these years.

  17. Westport Center for Senior Activities should be included too!

  18. Aini Rockwell

Toquet Hall for the teen element, Savvy & Grace, WTF and OMG, Candlelight. Lovely illustrations, these would make great Tea Towels for a Fundraiser.

  19. I love all these ideas. The basic architecture of the town is really cool. So many I wanted to add before I felt like it was a competition. Changed the image and wording to “westport museum” on my prints and website. Check it out for the update. Thank you all for the support.

    • Please take this as constructive criticism to a wonderful idea that should sell out its first printing at Savy and Grace!… But, not sure how you can put in Saug Sweets, Pop up Bagels, both of which have been in town for a relative 5 minutes, and leave out Mitchels, Gault, Christy’s, Little Kitchen and Minuteman Cleaners (I know I am leaving some out), oh yeah- Sakuras, Carvels, Black Duck, Viva Zapata’s etc.. – all much longer Westport business commercial icons, like Coffe-an, and Golds. Perhaps two versions. “New Westport Things” and Old Westport Things… Ships, Fine Arts I, II, III & IV, Klein’s, Sally’s Records, Arcudi’s, Arnie’s Place, Chubby Lanes, Remarkable Book Shoppe, Schaefers Sporting Goods, Marios Place, Mansion, ClamBox, Allen’s Clam House, Porky Maneros, Peter’s Bridge Grill, Che’ Pierre, Tack Room, Peppermill, Kowalsky Bros, Izzo’s, Westport Bank and Trust, Westport Pizza.
Also, aren’t MoCA and Westport Historical Society the same thing?(other than the political controversy).
Good luck to you and your soon to be classic print.

  20. I would include a bulldozer and a hazardous waste sign. Ya kno, think ahead?

Maybe play Dead Flowers by the Stones as an audio add?

  21. Karen Nordberg

Thank you for this!!!! Exactly the things I’ve been missing since moving away:( Do not miss traffic and cost of living but…having lived there for 18 years I am so grateful that my kids will always remember their hometown as a true gift. Would love to purchase this larger than 4X6?
