Remembering Wilbur

It’s never easy to lose a beloved pet.

Most of us mourn our losses in private. Sometimes there’s a little burial ceremony, or a poem or story written by a grieving child dealing for the first time ever with death.

Leave it to David Pogue to turn his cat’s demise into a celebration that is warm, witty and wonderful.

But why not? That’s the Westport writer/television correspondent/podcaster/ musician’s brand.

“I’m sad to report that Wilbur the Wackjob Cat has gone to the great laptop keyboard in the sky, just shy of his 23rd birthday,” Pogue emailed friends last weekend.

Wilbur

“He was known to many as the hilarious, inexplicable cat who inserted himself into every TV story and Zoom call.”

Wilbur lived his life on his own terms, for sure. And for nearly a quarter century Pogue documented it all, with a seemingly infinite number of photos and videos.

Then he stitched them all together, in a commemoration of his “fuzzy little screwball.”

The internet is full of cute cat videos.

This may be the best one of all.

Nice story. It could have written as a cat as trophy

I’m not a cat lover. In fact, I’m so afraid of cats it defies description. I do not know David Pogue. I did not know Wilbur. What I do know is I love everything about this video.

How beautiful. Farewell Wilbur. Perhap he was part Maine Coon Cat with those six toes. What a sweetie. So sorry for your loss.

A touching tribute to Wilbur Pogue. My polydactyl Chelsea Rose lived to age 22. It’s incredibly difficult losing our beloved pets as it is, but even more difficult when they’ve been part of our lives for so long. Deeply sorry for your loss.

I had an orange kitty, Ginger female. She lived to be 19. She was very pretty, beige around her nose and tiger stribes. As most cat she thought everything revolved around her. She could be very vocal. One time when a girl friend were visiting me and sitting in the chair Ginger liked to sleep on. Ginger sat right in front of her and let out a few loud mieuws (spelled wrong) my friend thought she was being friendly, I informed her that she was sitting in Ginger’s chair. My friend quickly got up and said sorry to Ginger. Ginger hopped up on the chair, and then gave my friend a dirty look, that I think meant “you were sitting in my chair, not cool”.

That was so touching. I have just recently lost one of my best friends. Sorry for your lost. Lara was a rescue and when I pick her up she fit in my hand. Brought her home my buddy Mike came by. Just thought yeah we are drinking beers. She was very vocal if he would go to the washroom she would cry out for him.
He got divorced and stay with me. At night I would lay down. Lara at my head, lil Shadow at my feet. (Got Shadow to keep Lara company.) Mike was allergic to cat but Lara would sleep with him,on him around him. It was cute . Then allergies gone. Now he is the super of my building.
But she was fine one day then all of a sudden hip problems. She had 3/4Maine coon. Within one week something else happened. But she waited for Mike to say good bye. Ten minutes after he left she drew her final breath. Shadow looked for her big sister for two weeks.

When I was in college there was this idiot down the hall who played “Cat Scratch Fever” over and over again until I flipped the circuit breaker on his room.
