And finally … Ian Finkel, “the world’s greatest xylophonist,” has died at 72. Who even knew there was such a thing?

  1. In the late 90’s, my girlfriend (and indirectly me) were given tickets to see his father Feivel, just off his TV gig, perform at Lincoln Center. Feivel decided to use the occasion to advance his son Ian and grandson Abbot, a drummer, by having them perform before he went on. I don’t remember much about either one except that we were waiting for them to hurry up and finish.

  2. Well, there was Lionel Hampton, whom I saw at Players’ Tavern when I was in high school. But he died in 2002, and I suppose technically he was a vibraphonist, so not quite the same thing.
