Friday Flashback #212

It doesn’t get much flashback-ier than this.

Jennie Greenburg Pickering sent in this vintage Westport poster:

Judging by the typeface — and some of the places pictured, like Pancho Villa’s and Party Barn — it’s from the 1980s.

But the now-gone landmarks are comparatively few. Many of the images are still recognizable, several decades later.

Does Westport change?

Sure?

Does it change as rapidly or definitely as we think?

Nope.

  1. I really enjoy seeing all of these iconic images lumped together. Sad that most, if not all of the downtown images reflect places where we worked, shopped, ate or hung out but have been lost with the passage of time.

  2. Just curious, does anyone remember when the name was changed from Sherwood Square to Sconset Square and why it was changed???

  3. Jack Backiel

Tom, How are you related to Barbara and Joe who used to live on Bauer Place?

  4. Rosemary Milligan

Can not remember exactly when rhe name was changed – maybe around 1995? was told name was changed to reflect a “classier” image – go figure!

Touché’ Rosemary!!! 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts the fine citizens of the Gray Lady have never been happy with Westport’s ‘attempt’ of imitation. What’s next? Compo being renamed, ‘Cisco’?

  5. Wish I could get a copy of that poster! So many wonderful Westport memories!

  6. BEATUS, CARYL

SHERWOOD SQUARE WAS FOUNDED BY HARRY SHERWOOD LONG LONG AGO. WHEN BV BROOKS BOUGHT THE SQUARE HE RENAMED IT SCONSET SQUARE, DEXTER WAS AN AVID BOATMAN, THUS THE NAME SCONSET

  7. Where can I get a copy of that poster?
