Ah . . .yes! the (infamous) Darien bypass of what would become the Connecticut Turnpike, and later, I-95. I was a junior at Staples in 1952 and had recently got my driving license and a car . . .well, something with four wheels and and engine. The dudes with their stripped down chassis and hotrod engines would use the not-yet opened Darien bypass as our own drag strip. Access was through a “locked” gate along a construction track to the “virgin” concrete roadways. The rodders would gather around eleven and race until the early hours of the morning. If the Darien police were aware of what we were doing, they never bothered us. I would like to imagine that the famous drag race scene in “American Graffiti” that featured a young Harrison Ford in his “boss” Chevvy, took its inspiration from our shenanigans.
