Beautiful photo. I spent many an evening on those courts under the lights when they were red clay back in the 70’s.

Red clay was there in the early 1980’s as well.

I’d hit some balls on those courts in the sweltering summer heat, then rode home on my bike in the late eve, red clay and all, tracking behind me.

A long shower was my primary goal, lol!

  2. Terrific shot. And, after all these years, I’m still not used to seeing at first blush the green color having worked at the courts when they were red clay.

Are the courts Har-Tru, or something else? I can’t tell from the photo.
It’s a great picture. Thank you.

      Yes Har-Tru.

One would think that an odd question, seeing as I don’t play tennis. Yet I was intimate with the care and maintenance of several Har-Tru courts back in 1979.
The location of the courts was the then John Newcombe Tennis Center at Stratton Mountain, Vermont. I was sowing wild oats right after college by working at the mountain ski shop in the winter, and that one summer I also took care of the tennis courts. Other fun summer jobs consisted of being a camp Counselor for an overnight camp (hike-in to lean-tos in the West River Valley, South Londonderry, VT), and Tour Guide for Bike Vermont.
I wasn’t very career focused, but it was a wonderful way to be young.
