After weeks of work on the old Boccanfuso auto body shop on the Post Road opposite Starbucks, the new tenant was unveiled yesterday.

    While this is all well and good, we lost another car repair shop in Westport. New ones are hard to come by due to zoning and other issues. Pretty soon the only place to fix a car will be at the dealers at 3X the price or in other towns, like that is convenient, especially when you don’t have a car.

    We all need to be aware of this situation. The neighbors by Christies fought for their shop to remain.

    Yeah yeah free market, but that does not mean we don’t work to preserve the infrastructure of our community.

      Matthew — We’re not exactly devoid of car repair garages in Westport. I can think of half a dozen off the top of my head, and I know there are several more. What has dwindled is the number of gas stations. Selling gas has low profit and high liabilities. Fixing cars is still profitable.

    What is the name of the store? The sign “Home Furnishings,” presumably, is just secondary to the store’s brand name?

    My guess is that it was the Rambler dealership.

    Was just driving by today and the rest of the sign is now up. The store is called Savoy.

    I believe this is an expanded venture for Savoy Rug Gallery, which is presently located diagonally across the street. If that’s the case, the owner, Nader, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

      I agree, Morley. I was in there recently with a rug I purchased in Turkey, and Mr. Nader assured me that it was a good piece and that I would enjoy it for many years. And he didn’t try to sell me anything!

    It was Corcoran’s Chevrolet
    modifying zoning to make gas stations non-conforming (which is what was done) is the opposite of a free market. I believe the purpose of the Chamber of Commerce is to encourage a free market

    First, my comment was made as an RTM member informing people about the issue of the loss of auto repair shops in the town. Note: the P&Z has actually discussed this a number of times in the past as an issue that needs to be monitored. Zoning constrains these businesses, but so does economics. The overall infrastructure of the town is important to our quality of life here. The neighbors near Christies saw that and acted. Why? Once a shop outside a very small area of town known as the Highway Service District leaves it can’t come back. Note2: Boccanfuso’s was the only one or two in that district, all the others are not.

    Second, the Chamber’s job is to promote the town and with it both the community and the businesses. Whether the free market aids in this or not is tangential.

    Mr Petrino – any time you want to sit and talk about issues in the town my door is always open.

    Mr. Petrino sounds a bit sharp. Funny, Dan, how certain commenters get away with it, and others do not.
