Westport’s Oldest Hockey Fan

Since he first arrived in 1910, Westport’s Minuteman has been decorated in many ways.

He’s worn a Santa Claus hat and Easter bunny ears. He’s sported a bra. He’s even been an anti-war protester, with flowers in the barrel of his musket.

But who knew he was a hockey fan?

Today — in honor of the New York Rangers’ Stanley Cup appearance — the Minuteman wields a hockey stick.

Yet his support pales beside another Westporter’s.

A sign on the Minuteman’s fence reads: “In homage to the biggest Ranger fan ever. Scott ‘Hoover’ Wilder. 1954-2008.”

Let’s go Rangers!

  1. Dan, I’m sure you didn’t miss the message about the scene paying homage to Scott “Hoover” Wilder (Staples class of 72), right?

I was there in the Garden for games 1, 2, 5 and 7 of the Stanley Cup series in 1994 (a season ticket holder back then) and 20 years later I still say: Let’s Go Rangers! We want the Cup! (and, of course, Potvin sucks!)

Nice to see that the Minuteman feels the same way!

Unfortunately I’m stuck here in La La Land having to put up with these so called hockey fans with their wind tunnel tested hair doos and Armani underwear…. Let’s go Rangers!
