Sunset For Daybreak?

Spring should be a busy time for Daybreak Nurseries.

And with Mother’s Day near, Daybreak Florist should be in high gear.

But several readers have contacted “06880.” They say the decades-old, very popular garden shop at the corner of Main Street and Weston Road is closed.

The Daybreak Florist website still urges users to place Mother’s Day orders. But phone calls to both numbers rang unanswered.

If anyone knows what’s going on, please click “Comments” to let us know.

This is one Westport treasure we hope we won’t lose.

I remember Daybreak Nursery in the early 1950’s when my family would drive down from Weston on Saturdays in the spring and summer. My sister and I would be fascinated with the rich smells and several glassed in greenhouse buildings and would play in the miniature house that must have been for kids.
Amazing it has stayed in business this long.

It went to forclosure sale and I was told Abel builders purchased the property.

  3. That is a shame. Evan spinning in his grave.

I’m sure Evan and Cyril are spinning in their graves! The last time I was there, Ann was managing it, but that was several years ago. I grew up in those greenhouses, planting yards, the little church. The Hardings were very good friends. It’s a shame to see it go. Evan built our house on Cross Highway, as well as the one behind it and his own up the hill. I think the only one left is our house. Beautifully built homes on big lots with fabulous landscaping.

Evan Harding did our initial landscape design when we moved to Westport 31 years ago. It was where we continually visited in all seasons. A great loss for the surrounding communities.

Oh no! Such a disappointment. Does anyone know where the employees ended up? Bruno was so helpful finding things that even I couldn’t kill.

I’m so sorry to learn this. I bought many things from Daybreak in the past. I just hope they don’t build another office building there. Or worse, another bank.

  9. I have been told 4 new homes will be built there.

Daybreak is one of my most ingrained-in-memory Westport landmarks, as after trips there with my mom, or just walking by, the place beckoned “Be a Gardener”!
I’d say what a shame, but there’s no point. Sad.

p.s. I now recall the beautiful Nevada Davis Hitchcock house! From a child’s eyes, it was a grand house with grand gardens, and quite mysterious.
    Thanks again to Morley Boyd.

  11. It’s sad to lose Daybreak Nurseries. David and Ann Harding are wonderful people, I’ve enjoyed the many years of friendship and shopping there. Times have been tough for all the nurseries.

Upon hearing this news, my mom writes “We were there in the good years.
    A nice unpretentious town”.

  13. Another year, another memory gone. How long will it take MainStreet to
continue to morph into Rodeo Drive East?

  14. Isabelle Isafan

If Abel Builders is doing a good job with the Wilton Rd. house, maybe there is some hope for how they will manage the development of this Westport landmark.

Sad to see another “landmark” removed. But it’s also very touching that we have such heartfelt, dear memories of all these institutions. Can still recall the scent of the spring flowering bulbs in that place…..
We’re very fortunate to have this column. Thanks again Dan!
