Senator Frank Lautenberg’s Westport Connection

Frank R. Lautenberg — the 5-term US Senator from New Jersey who died this morning at 89 — had strong ties to Westport.

His daughter Ellen, her husband Douglas Hendel and their children — Sen. Lautenberg’s grandchildren — are longtime residents here.

Sen. Lautenberg — a businessman first elected to the Senate in 1982 — was known for his strong advocacy of Amtrak, and his opposition to the tobacco industry.
