It’s B-a-a-a-c-k!

More  than 2 years after going dark, Bank of America’s time-and-temperature sign has returned.

Once again, drivers have something else to distract them while roaring through downtown.

We can assure ourselves that, yes, it really is as hot (or freezing) as we think it is.

The sign might even pick up where the old one left off, and be 75% accurate 50% of the time.

And who knows?  This proof that we really can go back in time (ho ho) gives hope for the resurrection of other long-lost Westport icons.

What’s next?  Big Top?

Ice Cream Parlor?

The Crest?

One can always dream! Can I ask as a former Westporter, what will happen to the old Y building after the new one is built? Will they renovate the original structure and keep it looking similar or will it be another tear down? I cannot imagine downtown Westport without that old familiar form standing guard on the corner of Main Street.

The Y is listed on Westport’s Historic Resources Inventory. This will only protect the building from demolition for 180 days after a demolition permit is applied for. It allows time for alternatives to be sought.

The best way to prevent demolition would be to get it designated as a local historic landmark. I don’t believe this has been done.

I think I heard that the Y’s agreement with the new owner(s) included a promise to preserve the exterior of the “old building” on the corner. However, I suspect that the interior will be completely gutted to make room for retail, office and living space.

The Y also seems to be a part of something called a “Business Center Zoning District/Historic.” I don’t know what sort of protection this provides. I suspect it may also provide some protection for the building.

Tacos or What? will make a comeback, hopefully…

Not without Dodie around. My wish list would be the Big Toppe. I haven’t had a really good burger in ages and those chopped onions, oh mama.
