Walk This Way

On Sunday, June 14 hundreds of people will race in the annual Staples High School/Volvo of Westport 5K Run in the Sun.

Most of them will be beaten by a guy who walks.

By day, Theron Kissinger is a Staples math teacher.  After school and on weekends, he’s one of America’s top race walkers.

Ranked consistently in the national Top 10 at both 20 and 50 kilometers, he’s finished as high as 3rd in the US 50km championship.  He’s qualified for 3 World Cups, and 4 Pan Am Cups.

Kissinger’s students are intrigued by his athletic accomplishments.  They — and other interested Westporters — can get a close-up look as he blows by them in the 5K.

The race — sponsored by Student Assembly — is a great community event, drawing students, teachers, alumni, families, friends and supporters.  Proceeds benefit Staples Tuition Grants — a group that this year has had to do much more, with far less.

Registration is $15 in advance, $20 on race (or race walk) day. Click here to sign up.
