Tom Jones will star in the Levitt Pavilion’s annual fundraiser, on June 19.
The Levitt’s luck with headliners has been pretty good. My favorites were 2 you wouldn’t expect to see anywhere near Connecticut: Willie Nelson (with special, unannounced guest star Keith Richards), and Buckwheat Zydeco.
But most of the time the Levitt can’t land (or afford) a Willie Nelson. They’ve got to pluck entertainers off the wow-I-thought-they-were-dead-but-it’s-cool-they’re-coming-to-Westport list: Smokey Robinson, America, that crowd.
Only one or two have bombed. The Beach Boys were unfortunately atrocious, although to be fair they should have called themselves the Beach Grandparents.
I hadn’t thought about Tom Jones in years. But he’s got a great reputation as a crowd-pleaser, so on June 19 I will probably catch his show. It’s a lot more convenient than Foxwoods or Vegas.
Tom Jones in Westport. For the Levitt, it’s not unusual.
