Main Street just lost another eatery.
Mexicue served its last chips, fajitas and margaritas this week.
The 2-old-restaurant — in the space previously occupied by Bobby Q’s and, before that, Onion Alley — struggled to fill the large dining room and patio.
Mexicue’s 2 New York locations (Midtown and NoMad), and the one in Stamford, remain open.

Empty tables at Mexicue.
The closing follows the apparent shutdown of 159 Main (the successor to Rye Ridge Deli and, before that, Oscar’s). A sign on the door said, “We are closing for a few days to carry out necessary upgrades.” But the interior has been dark, with no work being done.

Time for a serious sports bar with good pub grub?
I don’t think many folks will mourn 159 ( Rye Ridge Deli). The only constants were awful service and disappointing food. Let’s hope something better grabs that space. Main Street could use a better dining option.
You forgot about the high prices. When it officially reopened as “159”, I went in for a trial run and ordered a pastrami on rye w/mustard. Went over to Gold’s (’cause I was actually hungry) and ordered the same thing. 159’s had half as much, and worse, pastrami at 50% higher price. The chutzpah of any deli that thought it could compete with Gold’s…
Well said and oh so true.
That’s too bad, Mexique was a nice restaurant. Nice atmosphere, good food. I don’t know if this contributed, but downtown parking just isn’t sufficient for the clientele going to all the stores and businesses there.
Oops. Mexicue.
Stupid name, regardless of spelling.
We tried Mexicue a few times, but sadly every occasion came with some form of disappointment. At the Grand opening week, service was extremely slow. Bad enough that every table in the restaurant (about 7) had to raise their hand at least once or more to get a form a service. Assuming it was the struggles of a launch, we ventured back over the summer, but sure enough with only three tables in the entire place, service was extremely slow. 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and then 45 minutes for a few tacos and a burrito. Atmosphere and Good food go a long way, but service will always prevail.
The good restaurants in Westport are so packed these days you’d think the Stock Market was at an all-time-high…
We really wanted to like Mexicue but the overly salty dishes were not appealing the few times we ate there.
Did they still charge for chips and salsa? Go to Mexica on the Post Road to get free chips and salsa and delicious margaritas!
As a well travelled European I’d love to see higher dining standards here. Golds needs a complete overhaul. It’s grubby in my opinion, dated & packed with stuff. Just awful. The deli not much better. Come on Westport let’s demand better!
That’s a shame! The food there was sooo good if you knew what to order. We had some amazing meals there with a great waitstaff. It’s hard to fill a restaurant space of that size — we hope they turn up in another location!
golds is a gem just the way it is
We agree with Ellen! Mexica is family owned- used to be downtown as Villa del Sol. Nice people!! Complimentary salsa and chips! Great potent Frozen Marguerittes- my limit is one!! Friendly service and delicious food- everything on the menu is done right!! My wife loves their ceviche! I like the shrimp fajitas or the taco salads!!
Oscar’s was our goto deli. Lee Papageorge knew how to run his deli! Good service, good sandwiches and friendly. Rye Ridge Deli in Stamford was way better than the Westport version.
Once you have had Tex-Mex in the Lone Star State, nothing can compare.
We tried mexicue a few times. IMO it was mismanaged. Ad service each tine. A shame but preventable
*Service was horrible each time. Even when it was empty.
Gold’s Deli is as Westport as Compo Beach and Town Hall.
The whole staff from Jim and Nancy on down are warm ,friendly people who work hard to serve their guests .
They use good quality products and have reasonable prices.
In house curing of pastrami and corned beef and house made products are rare today even for the ultra discerning diner.
For that you need places like my childhood go to like Katz’s in NYC and the original Russ and Daughters a few doors down.
They are a bit “grubby “ too .
Exactly in the same charming ,comfortably old fashioned way as Gold’s.
Pastrami on rye for lunch today for sure.
perfectly phrased! Golds deli owners, Nancy and Jim, bend over backwards to service all customers. last minute platters or sandwiches needed? They always make it happen!
