Sayonara, Matsu Sushi

Alert “06880” reader Molly Alger writes:

We had dinner at Matsu Sushi tonight, as we do every few weeks. We were devastated to learn that this was their last night in business after 17 years.

Here is a photo of the owner’s wife (middle), and the exquisite tray they gave us. They tried to give us serving dishes and other things as well. I am so sorry to see this great restaurant close. 😢😢😢

This is a shame. Cant tell you how many times I got sushi take out and went to the levitt. They will be missed.

We were the first ones in there last night and they gave us no indication they were closing when we left at 6:30pm. The place was completely packed when we left. The food was great as usual. Our family is shocked. So sorry to hear they closed! 😢

They were wonderful. They were always happy to lend us that tray, and one time the boat, for parties at home. We just had to promise to bring it back the next day. What a loss.

Fastest, most dependable delivery in Westport. What will I do without my occasional Chicken Katsu fix? Very unhappy.

  7. Hi, is the restaurant closing related to the issue of how workers have been poorly treated by the owners (discussed in previous 06880 postings) ?

    • Richard Fogel

yes it is the restaurant where its workers protested outside for abusive treatment. I guess the town only cares about dogs and ospreys. It reminds me how Trump treats immigrants. Why would the community support such abusive ownership?

    • Not sure, but I think one of the owners wanted a change.

  8. OMG, the very best and freshest seaweed salad. thank you Matsu Sushi for the wonderful food …you will be sorely missed….

    • I can’t imagine eating sushi anywhere else. We will all have to report back where to go next. I have never had such fresh, large, and reasonably priced sushimi anywhere.

It was a great restaurant for quite some time.many nice family events. The last time we went though the sashimi was not fresh. They were kind enough to accept our concern and did not charge for it. Great customer service was always a hallmark there too. every thing else was great as always.
Wishing the owners well in any new ventures

After discovering how terribly they treated their employees, I could never again go in there in good conscience – and I didn’t. They have no one to blame for their closing but themselves. There are consequences for mistreating and exploiting your workers. My heart goes out to those workers who will probably never be made whole.

    • Agreed. I feel for the employees who – for whatever legal / personal reasons- had no choice but to work there & will now be out of work !?

  13. I agree with Bobbie Tager that we will miss Matsu Sushi. We have moved to NJ but often went there when we were back in Westport. I support the workers but I thought they’d worked out a solution.

  14. Apparently the plan is for 1 of the original owners to continue on, however with a whole new staff.
I will miss my favorite Matsu crew.
