Beauty By The Beach

Minus 14 is a very rare Westport reading.

Almost as rare is ice in Long Island Sound.

Compo Beach resident Jim Hood captured these powerful — and beautiful — moonscape-like images today.

  1. Beautiful, Jim!

  2. My grandparents talked about a winter you could walk on ice to several of the Norwalk Islands

Ice isn’t all that rare in Long Island Sound, at least not in Saugatuck bay. In fact, when I was younger ( 🙄) two boys made the paper for walking on the ice out to Cockenoe (which brought out the police).

    Love these!

I also remember some winters of thickly formed ice off Compo (probably when I was a kid in the 1970’s), and always thought it was so cool to see!

Gorgeous pictures. I mentioned this before but my Dad claimed that when he was a teenager old enough to drive the Sound was frozen all the way to Cockenoe and he drove his car across the ice. I have no idea if it was true. My Dad was a great story teller. Most of his “stories” were accurate but he did tend to embellish from time to time. 🙂

  7. Beautiful Westport.

  8. I’ve likened this morning to the first day of spring…
The water in our pipes flowed freely for the first time in a long time, the banister felt warm as I walked downstairs and I couldn’t help but thank God for having gotten us through a tough spell, weather-wise.
But then, I remembered, it’s January 8th…no matter. At 19 degrees (above zero!), today is wonderful!
