Stop & Chop

Alert “06880” reader — and tree-lover — Jeff Seaver was appalled last night to discover that nearly every tree in the sprawling Stop & Shop parking lot was gone.

Here’s one small example:

Jeff did a little digging. Today, he writes:

“Stop & Shop manager Dave — a very nice man — says he is not sure why the trees are gone. He wasn’t sure if it was disease or overgrowth, or why they couldn’t just prune.

“S&S does not own the parking lot, but the owner of the lot – who is located down at the far end — is planning to replace the trees. Replacements are stacked up at the end of the building, waiting to go in.”

Jeff also provided the headline for this story. Good to know it doesn’t end badly.

My friend Helene and I saw this last night when we did our weekly shopping. We asked our favorite checkout guy what was going on. He told us the trees had gotten too large and the insurance company decided they were at risk of falling on cars or people so insisted they be replaced. They are all being replaced — the new trees are already on site.

It’s a shame — I think the insurance company is idiotic for forcing this — the trees were pretty and it’s going to take quite a while for the replacements to look as nice. The trees were not that big.

I know that all of the lighting will soon be upgraded to brighter LED lighting as well.

If the trees stacked at the end of the lot are the replacements, they look YUGE!

  5. Most of them were dead and did you notice the back hoe, huge pile of dirt, and all the new trees in the far corner awaiting planting? Unfortunately, a tree needs in ground space (for rain) the same as the branch span so these are doomed also unless they lose a parking space around each one…no big deal, right? They won’t !!

My company did the tree removal and replacement plus we planted the original red maples 24 years ago,the trees had die back,so instead of replacing a few trees now and a few more next year we decided to replace them all with princeton elms along with a drip irrigation /feeding lines. So I hope all the concerned “tree people ” are now informed. Anthony Palmer, T.Palmer Landscaping Co LLC

What about the row of sycamores along the Post Road in front of the S&S? Are they still there?
