New Construction At Compo: Yours For $100!

Homes With Hope‘s supportive housing offers hope to men, women and children, all down on their luck.

This morning, HWH officials had a different hope: a break in the weather.

Sure enough, by noon the gloom was gone.

And the 13th annual “Castles in the Sand” was on.

The clever event — a sand-building competition — is both fun and fundraising. Organizations, friend groups and families pay $100 for a small lot, $300 for a bigger one.

At noon, they started creating.

By 2 p.m., it looked like this:

This sandy creature promotes the Great Duck Race (June 21 on the Saugatuck River.)

To hell with “sand castles.” In 2014, go for a “sand iPhone.”

Working from a photo (middle), this group built “the Kemper-Gunn House.”

It’s supposedly a mermaid. But it just looks like a great chance to play in the sand.

At 4 p.m., it will all be over.

Because they’re castles in the sand, they’ll soon be gone.

But — thanks to so many kids of all ages at the beach today — Homes With Hope’s good works will still stand strong.
