Friday Flashback #231

Westport’s first fast-food franchise was Dairy Queen, on the Post Road near downtown.

That DQ (not to be confused with the one further east, where Little Barn is now) later became the Crest Drive-In. Much later — after demolition — that was the site of Qdoba. Today it’s vacant.

Westport has had other national fast food chains — Roy Rogers, for example (now McDonald’s). And Arby’s.

But that roast beef franchise — most notable for never having, to my knowledge, one single customer, ever — was not the first at that spot.

In the late 1960s, Carrol’s opened there. It was a red-letter day for Westport teenagers.

Burgers were cheap. Parking was easy. You could hang out with friends, talk loudly, and pretend you were at a real fast food place, like Burger King.

Which Carrol’s became, after Carrol’s. And before Arby’s.

The drive-thru window is still there. But today it’s a Starbucks.

If that doesn’t say something about how Westport has changed, I don’t know what does.

Hooray! Not Another Bank Or Nail Salon!

Instead, the former Getty station between Qdoba and the Saugatuck Church has been transformed into something we really need:

New quick mart

A gas station with coffee, hot dogs, sandwiches and snacks.

Plus 24-hour towing. Though don’t ask me how it all will fit.

Westporters of a certain age remember what this spot looked like, back in the day:

Look closely. That’s a police car at Dairy Queen. (Hover over or click the photo.)

Life was so simple then.

Que Pasa, Qdoba?

You may not have heard of Qdoba. But your kids probably have.

As reported in “06880” way back in Enero, the Mexican grill — beloved by college students for its (relatively) fresh food and (somewhat) reasonable prices — is coming to our little ciudad.

The sign went up today:

Qdoba

Burritos, quesadillas and 3-cheese nachos can’t be far behind.

Qdoba is located in the free-standing space at the entrance to Playhouse Square. The previous tenant was Pierre Deux. Before that, it was Alphagraphics. Earlier, it was Sam Goody.

Waaaaay before that, the Crest Drive-In.

And yeah — even longer ago, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth — it was a Dairy Queen.

Fortunately, Qdoba has its own parking lot. So traffic in Playhouse Square won’t be adversely affected — well, not too much.

On the Post Road around that light, though — ¡ay, caramba!

Scott Beck — a managing partner with the group that is turning Swanky Frank’s into The Little Barn — needs help.

He’d like to hang some pictures of the building’s history. Not Swanky Frank’s — before that. When it was Dairy Queen.

But he can’t find any. They’ve melted away, like a Blizzard Treat in the summer sun.

Surely someone who worked there — flipping Brazier burgers — has a photo somewhere.

If you do, contact sbeck@sonorestaurantgroup.com. And cc “06880.”

We’re licking our lips in anticipation.

This is not the Dairy Queen we're looking for. The photo above shows what is now the entrance to Playhouse Square. This DQ later became the Crest Drive-In. We're looking for the Dairy Queen that turned into Swanky Frank's, near Barnes & Noble.
