Westport’s history is filled with famous names.
Samuel Burr Sherwood shares 2 of them. He is little remembered today. But a bronze plaque — honoring his service in the Connecticut Assembly and House of Representatives — hangs in the Westport Library stairwell, between the lower and main levels.
Once upon a time, more people knew Samuel Burr Sherwood — enough, anyway, to put a plaque for him. It — and a similar one for Ebenezer Jesup (great name!) — hung in the original library, on Post Road East.
When the new building was constructed in 1986, they were moved there.

Mill Pond. Where kids of all ages have been jumping and diving for as long as I can remember.

Old Mill on the gates. I also used to dive and jump there as a young whippersnapper…
Old Mill Gates. Signs were installed 2020 after a large amount of youths were congregating there when neighbors complained. Later, there was one individual who was injured from jumping.

This was definitely easy — yes, it’s the Sherwood Mill Pond bridge, off of which generations of Westporters have jumped. And still continue to.
