Today’s Unsung Heroes selection is a no-brainer.
They’re true heroes this week, and next. Especially, the week after that one.
But really, our FedEx, UPS, US Post Office and Amazon delivery people are heroes 52 weeks of the year.
They bring us our our packages, quickly and efficiently.
They do it in all kinds of weather. They do it despite a dizzying array of obstacles: traffic, nowhere to park, locked gates, blocked paths, snarling dogs, vague addresses, missing house numbers, unwieldy packages … the list is as long as the long list of deliveries.
We complain occasionally that they put our stuff by doors we don’t use. Or they don’t ring the bell.
Well, boo hoo. If you or I had their job, we’d do it far less efficiently — and far less quickly — than they.
So this month. if you’ve got a regular delivery person, tip him or her handsomely.
If not, put some treats out for whoever shows up.
We’re lucky — especially during this pandemic — that we can order whatever we want, whenever we want to, knowing it will show up pretty much whenever it was promised.
We’re far luckier to have the men and women who make it possible. They are truly our Unsung Heroes.
IMPORTANT PS (ho ho!): I’m not forgetting our amazing US Postal Service letter carriers (who often carry packages too). I’ve featured several as Unsung Heroes over the years — including our very first Unsung Hero ever (click here).

Shout out to USPS postal carrier Dominick, who has delivered my mail since
about 1987.
Also to the enormously helpful staff at the Westport Avenue facility and of course the great staff at the USPS facility in Playhouse Square.
And finally, thanks to the many different UPS, Fedex and other delivery people & services who have provided us with lifelines and supply lines throughout the pandemic and are working hard to make our Christmas mail & packages get to us on time.
I’m truly not looking to rain on anyone’s parade since the majority of these delivery people are great, but if you happen to live on a private road where the driver has to make his/her/their way up the road to the driveways of various houses……well, in this scenario it’s a complete crapshoot whether they will take the time to actually go up your driveway and drop the package at your front door. MANY times packages have been left on the ground by the mailboxes by the street, and anyone could simply pull over and grab the packages, and god forbid they are packages of real value. Regardless though, no package should be delivered in a half-ass fashion, and I can guarantee that it isn’t just our street where this is occurring…….so if your stuff isn’t being delivered to your door, find out which dispatch area your packages
originated from, and call Management there.
Yes, praise when it’s called for….. but hold folks accountable when things are being executed horribly.
I have had some issues with deliveries from Amazon even when they show a photo of it being left on the front porch? FedEX man has disappeared and they can be a pain in the butt signing for stuff. UPS? Lord, can not get passed the color of the truck/uniforms. But, Dave, judging from “Shark Tank,” there are all sorts of wannabe Mark Cubans out there who will invent private one big storage bins for individual homes and/or private roads
BIG SHOUT OUT to our Mr. Postman, Sean. Santa already rewarded him for another good year sans a 10K check being stolen out of the box. ‘Tis the season.
And let’s not forget the newcomers to the delivery club, Amazon!
