Westport Makes A Wish Come True

Hundreds of Westporters of all ages headed to the Westport Weston Family YMCA this afternoon.

Wearing masks, holding cards and signs, they made a very ill 6-year-old boy’s wish come true.

He had asked the Make-a-Wish Foundation if he could swim with his family, have a pizza party, and pet a bearded dragon.

The Y went one step further. They encouraged a crowd to come cheer the youngster on.

It quickly became a community event. Retirees, families with their own little kids, the Fire and Police Departments — all welcomed him with applause.

And showered him with love.

It was truly wonderful to see the community come out in force on such short notice. Personally, I loved seeing two of my favorite organizations, the Westport Weston Family YMCA & Make a Wish Connecticut, come together to create such a special day for a child warrior. The power of a Wish is something hard to convey unless you’ve experienced it, yet I’d venture to say that everyone engaged in today’s Wish felt that power. Not just the incredible family but all of the community members supporting them. It was brief, it was masked, it was rainy, it was distanced, yet it was a wonderful happy moment. Well done by the Y, Westport Fire and Police Departments, and everyone involved. Special kudos to the person with the dragon balloon! Loved that!

  3. Such a wonderful gift from this wonderful community. God love this brave little guy, his family, the Y and Make-a-Wish.

  4. You, Mr. Woog, and the people in attendance at the “Y” today, have delivered a big dose of good medicine! All around. Thank you.

It was a beautiful afternoon at the Y and I”m reminded how boldly this community comes out for good. Raining slightly, foggy for sure but the sense of community was palpable for this exquisite young man. Reminding us all that love is all around us and to know that we are all loved much more than any one of us can understand. I believe this young man saw this today. Now go and pet a bearded dragon or whatever little thing in life brings you joy. That’s what its all about!
