Roundup: Outdoor Dining Tents, More

COVID, colder weather, the holidays, heated tents — when considering outdoor dining, Westporters have lots to think about.

The other day Rowena Weems asked Bartaco about their tent. News reports said that outdoor tents with no open panels are no different than being indoors.

Chris Messina — Bartaco’s regional director — replied:

“We purchased a heated tent with 3 motors. This circulates air more than 3 times the amount of inside. These motors pump heated fresh air at all times.

“In addition, the tent is not perfectly sealed, so ventilation is actually even better than the already great specifications we have.

“The small tents in New York City with no heated units or ventilation are worse than indoors. That’s not what we and most restaurants are investing in.

“We’ve spent a large amount of money to ensure our guests are safe and we can all get through this together.”

“Here are Bartaco’s specs:

  • Total tent area: 33,972 cubic feet.
  • Heating system CFH (cubic feet per hour of fresh, hot air): 288,000 cfh
  • Air changes per hour: 8.5

“In a normal insulated building with HVAC, there might be 3-6 changes per hour (on the high side).”

Sure, Thanksgiving is around the corner. We’ve already had our first frost.

But the recent weather revived thoughts of summer. Well, at least for this one guy at Compo Beach on Friday.

Thanksgiving is Thursday. Which means it’s time for … Christmas lights!

Andrew Colabella spotted these — the first of the season? — on Edgewater Hillside.

The hell with the turkey. Get out there and decorate!

And finally … on this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was murdered in Dallas. There have been a number of turning points in American history. This was one of the most crucial.

  1. I find many outdoors tents with no air circulating and the sided flaps is similar to being indoors…we all want to support local places, but do pick up, take out, cook more at home…then this will slow the virus transmission. Risk/reward, pause and really ask yourself.

  2. Glad you remembered JFK. I’ve seen no acknowledgment of the day in the media . A day I can never forget.

  3. Who killed JFK?

    • Ted Cruz’s father

Please tell me you are not serious.

        • OANN said Trump said Ted Cruz’s father was involved. Can you prove he wasn’t?

One America News Network (OANN), also known as One America News (OAN), is a far-right, pro-Donald Trump cable channel…

…the channel has described itself as one of the “greatest supporters” of President Trump.Trump himself has promoted the network.

The channel is prominent for promoting falsehoods and conspiracy theories.

The state considers outdoors a tent with 2 sides with 50% of total wall space down. meaning an end and long side. A 4 sided tent is considered indoors, must meet all building code for ventilation, but must still have a door and 2 windows open at all times. This was their latest guidance as of last week.

Consider BYOB bring your own blanket to stay warm outside and please dine earlier, as restaurants must stop serving at 9:30, as per the Governor.

“We’ve already had our first frost”? That’s nuttin’. I was going through old emails and came across one about the 6 inches of snow that we had on November 8, 2012. It left thousands on Long Island without power, even closing Penn Station for a few hours because of the impact on the LIRR.

    • There was also a freak snowstorm on Hallowe’en 2011. The snow was so heavy that it brought down a beautiful apple tree in our yard, because it still had all its leaves.

Thank you so much for remembering President Kennedy on this day. It is a day I will never forget. I do wish that Earl Watson would take down his comment. It is not funny or even light hearted.

    • As a candidate for president, Donald Trump repeated rumors that Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the assassination.

      • Bill Strittmatter

Well, there are still classified documents on the JFK investigation whose release was delayed by Trump due to national security/intelligence agency concerns. So, could be the Cruz thing was another inadvertent Trump leak of classified information? Or maybe he was just making stuff up. In any event, the world eagerly awaits the next release deadline in 2021.

        • Russell Gontar

The “Cruz thing” was just another torpedo launched by the failed, impeached, one-term, didn’t win the popular vote (twice) president against his opponent, just like he torpedoed ‘low engery” Jeb and “sleepy joe” and “not a citizen” Obama.

I look forward to DT “settling up” with NY state and civil law.

  7. beautiful pictures!!! I do miss all the lovely fall colors, but not the oncoming winter in the north!! And, yes, will always remember the day
JFK was killed. I was teaching, and our principal came around to tell us
It was so hard to finish the school day!! That weekend was so tragic with
all the stories — will never forget – a horrible day for America!!

When JFK was killed, I was a teen ager in my native Denmark. I was visiting my aunt in Copenhagen, when we heard the first bulletin. 30 minutes later we heard the sad news. I will never forget my aunts reaction “My God, they killed him”. The next 4 days the Danes did what American’s did, we watched all the sad events on TV, and if I was out with friends all we talked about was the assassination.
