Actually prehistoric. Wikipedia: Given their origin 450 million years ago, horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_crab
I’ve Also been to beaches on the West Coast, Europe, & Africa, Where there were creatures unknown to me. but I’ve never seen horseshoe crabs like at Compo Beach in my youth.

They look so menacing, and yet they are so benign. I think I must have been shown a horseshoe crab at a very early age, as they bring-up feelings of beach enjoyment. As a boy I remember picking them up by their tails to stare at them.
Please do not turn over the horseshoe crabs when you see them at the edge
of the water upside down.
Why, Carol? I remember running around as a kid, teen, young adult w/my sister flipping as many back over as possible to “save them”- did we do wrongly? Thank you.
Does anyone else see the face with beard/mustache and helmet?

Definitely… a cross between heads of a Klingon and a Caribbean pirate!
Not only horseshoe crabs, but
does anyone remember the
starfish invasion on South
beach in the early seventies?
Seemingly thousands of them
covered the rocks one day and
were gone the next.
That was my first thought! And the squinting eyes!
