“Drivers never give us any room!” Westport bicyclists complain.
“You never stop at stop signs!” motorists counter.
It’s not fair to paint either group with a broad brush.
Here’s proof — at least for one side.
This afternoon, a group of riders stopped at the Hillspoint Road sign by Elvira Mae’s.
And — just to show that’s how they roll — they sent a smiling selfie to “06880.”

Just so every one knows, by state law, motorists are required to give cyclists 3 feet of room when passing. And please don’t try to pass if there is oncoming traffic. Oncoming traffic may not realize there are cyclists on your side of the road. Wait and then pass safely. Thanks!

Glad to see it. Last week I was walking at that same spot and cars started blaring their horns as bike after bike went thru the stop sign

I was just thinking today that after commenting a couple of weeks ago that the next bike that stops at a stop sign will be the first bike. It still holds true.
The two in front are riding two abreast though. Single file is the law. Typical bikers.

I think your comment was misleading, the issue is bikers don’t go to one line when needed for cars to pass.
It is frustrating to want to be safe for the bikers, but the bikers don’t try to protect themselves by staying in a line on our busy roads. They really be come road blocks.
Connecticut General Assembly Statues sez:
Sec. 14-286b. Operation of bicycles; attaching to moving vehicle prohibited; carrying of passengers, packages, bundles and other articles restricted; at least one hand to be kept on handle bars. Operators of roller skates, sleds, skateboards, coasters and toy vehicles prohibited from attaching to moving vehicle. Penalty. (a) Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, except when (1) making a left turn pursuant to subsection (b) of section 14-241, (2) overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, (3) overtaking and passing pedestrians, parked vehicles, animals or obstructions on the right side of the highway, and (4) when the right side of the highway is closed to traffic while under construction or repair.
(b) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. Persons riding two abreast, as provided in this subsection, shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, and, on a laned roadway, shall ride within a single lane.
It is so disheartening to read all the negative commentary regarding bike riding in our town. Isn’t this an activity we as a community want to encourage – for the environment and for personal health. As drivers, can we not adapt to a cyclist for the times we encounter them along the roadways? If NYC can embrace CITIBIKE, can’t we accommodate our friends and neighbors who have chosen to get some fresh air?
