On any list of Earthplace highlights, the birds of prey nest near the top.
Brought to the nature center off Stony Brook Road because of injury, they’re cared for and nursed back to health. Each year, thousands of visitors — including many youngsters — marvel at them up close, and appreciate how special each one is.
They can’t survive in the wild, but find sanctuary at the sanctuary.
Unfortunately, Earthplace’s longtime supplier of food is unable to continue donating. The non-profit must raise $14,000 to keep their rescued raptors fed.
Earthplace is personalizing its appeal:
- $25 feeds Edgar, the raven, for 2 weeks
- $50 feeds Ladybird, the horned owl, for 2 weeks
- $100 feeds Talon, the red-tailed hawk, for 1 month
- $250 feeds Chatty and Cerena, the bald eagles, for 1 month.

I love all the birds (and the bees, LOL) on this precious planet of ours, and if I had the means to make these suggested donations (I loved how Earthplace explained how much is needed to feed each bird, and for how long), I would do so in a millisecond.
Alas, it’s not in the cards for me at the moment. “Transitionally broke” describes my situation. Hey, it can happen to anyone, anytime, and for any reason. But my empathy for the animals never waivers.
Maybe someone with some clout and creativity within the townie’s of Westport can put together a little fundraiser of sorts? Just a thought.

Oh, and ironically enough, I just tuned in to the end of Sunday’s 60 Minutes program this eve, and the last segment was about raptors, and the folks who participate in their hunting, creating a human-bird cooperation that was frankly beautiful … no words, actually!
