Klaff’s Closes

Klaff’s — the popular home design store — closed its Westport location in 2013. The Taylor Place stockroom and storage area had been flooded a few months earlier, during Hurricane Sandy.

Klaff’s was located in downtown Westport.

Now the flagship store in Norwalk is closed too.

The Norwalk Hour reports that the doors were shut “abruptly” yesterday, following 97 years in business.

CEO Joe Passero cited a “perfect storm” of factors, including internet competition, the 2015 arrival of a nearby Lowe’s, and the opening next year of the SoNo Collection mall at I-95 Exit 16.

Klaff’s former Westport store is now occupied by South Moon Under. There is no word on what will go into Klaff’s Norwalk space.

Just at about the same time that Amazon is starting to buy up bricks & mortar retailers. But we all get lower prices so I guess Gordon “Greed is Good – Greed Purifies” Gekko and his soulmate Jeff Bezos are having the last laugh.

  4. When we moved into our house 20 years ago, we ordered all new light fixtures from Klaffs in Westport. We got the fixtures (which we still have and use), but we also got a hand-written thank you card in the mail. That kind of personalized, customer- first service is hard to find these days. Sad to see that there will be one less business providing it.
