Happy 100th, Lee Greenberg!

Lee Greenberg — a longtime and iconic Westporter — celebrated her 100th birthday this week.

Lee Greenberg, 100 years young,

She entertained a crowd of 50 — mostly relatives, and a few of her fellow Rotary Club members — at Maplewood at Strawberry Hill. Lee broke her hip a few weeks ago, but is recovering well there.

Lee Greenberg has 4 great-grandchildren. Zefera — shown here — will be 100 in 2115.

Family members came from as far as California for the celebration.

Lee Greenberg with her children: Mike, Debbie and Gail.

Lee asked that in lieu of gifts, donations be made to Westport Rotary. Guests happily obliged.

Michael — married to Lee’s granddaughter Allegra — entertained the crowd (and his grandmother-in-law).

Happy birthday, Lee! Thank you for all you’ve given the town. Here’s to many more candles, and a lot more cake!

These “long-term Westporters” like Lee are true treasures to the community. I used to know just about all of them before I moved away in ’78. I’ve lived in my Ohio town for 25 years now (which is seven years longer than I lived in Westport – unfortunately for me) and I doubt that there are many other towns that have treasures like Lee that add so much to the quality of life for everybody. What I’ve observed is that Dan’s blog features them almost every week. Maybe Dan deserves a smidgen of the recognition that he so grandly bestows through his blog. Anyway, it’s “Thanksgiving in January.” Continued long life and happiness to you Lee!!!

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Lee!! Xoxo

    Happy Birthday Lee Greenberg.
Growing up as one of Gail’s friends, Mrs. Greenberg was one of the cooler Moms. We all adored her. So strong and confidant, she also understood us as preteeners. That was a big deal to us.
Ill so happy that I saw this post and could send happy wishes to you, Gail and the rest of the family.

    Happy Birthday Mrs. Greenberg.
Back in the ’50’s there was a “Greenberg’s Department Store on Main Street. Any chance this is the same Greenberg Family? We bought everything from underwear to material and patterns there.

    • Definitely this is the same Greenberg’s (and Lee’s husband was Nat, I believe). We got our Girl Scout uniforms and almost everything else at “Greenberg’s”. I just wonder where my longtime friend, Linda Greenberg Libow, was in these photos. She did a fabulous job arranging the catering for the 55th reunion of Staples `60 two years ago!!!

Thanks Linda. I was sure that there had to be a connection. What a wonderful place Greenberg’s was, bought my first pair of Bermuda shorts there when they first came out. Thanks for the reminder that they also sold us our Girl Scout uniforms.
