Friday Flashback #66

Recent Friday Flashbacks have featured interesting sites at the head of Main Street: Needle Park (the old library plaza) for example, and West Lake Chinese restaurant.

This week’s flashback goes way further back — all the way to the turn of the 20th century.

This circa-1900 photo of E. Lehn’s Bakery shows that same area of downtown. It looks a lot different today — and also very similar.

  1. Didn’t this turn into Marvel Bakery? In the 50’s it was next to Colgan’s and I remember going in for chocolate eclairs. Fond memories of a different downtown

Thanks Paul! (And Dan for sharing) Great Photo !!!!!

  3. Wow Dan, that’s my great grandfather’s bakery, Edward Lehn!!! There’s a street in Westport named after them too, Lehn Farm Rd, off of Roseville Rd. Who took that photo, any idea? Or I should say, who gave that photo to you?
Thanks so much, brings back so many memories!

    • Hi Roger, wow indeed! Unfortunately I know nothing about the photo. I just found it on Facebook, where Paul Ehrismann posts great old images in both the Exit 17 and Exit groups. I wish I could tell you more.

      • Sharon Paulsen

        Wow, pretty cool find, Dan.

I don’t “do” Facebook (jaded from working in the advertising/social media biz, lol), so I guess I’m missing out on stuff like “Exit 17” group posts.

Thanks for sharing this! More, please!

    • Roger, I believe I have seen another photo of that bakery with your great-grandparents posing in front of it. I just can’t remember now where I have seen it.

  4. Marvels Bakery! Had not thought of it in years and the eclairs were wonderful – but don’t remember it after about 1965 or so.

  5. many a birthday cake from MARVELS…frosting thick and to die for… thanks, Mom !
