Pic Of The Day #106

WHY WAS THE MILL POND DRAINED? IS THIS A NORMAL PROCEDURE?
Yes – it keeps it healthy.
Neat!
There is a regular schedule of tide gate openings in the summer to flush out the pond of dead seaweed and other natural organic matter. As Dan said, it helps to keep the estuary clean and healthy. The gates are usually opened at night and closed first thing in the morning so its hard to see but we also open the gates during the daytime a few times a month to assess the oyster crop and do equipment checks. Might be an interesting variation on the current oyster farm tours that we are doing to have a “drained pond tour.”
