It’s been a while. It will be a while more. But Westporters are still talking about plans to “repeal and replace” the William Cribari (aka Bridge Street) Bridge.
The subject is as controversial as ever.
But here’s one thing we can all agree on:

I am not sure what they are mulling over. It was declared to be historical! Homes that are historical in Westport get a plaque to place on them. Restore the bridge please.

That is a beautiful shot. I liked it that it is simultaneously a a color and a black and white photo. Study it and you’ll see what I mean.

What controversy?
The Department of Transportation held a hearing at town hall a year ago to gauge local sentiment regarding its plans to supersize this span and create an I95 mini me. Westport residents came out droves and clubbed the agency like a baby seal. The DOT people piled into their stupid minivan and went squealing out of the parking lot.
And no one has heard from them since.

I watch every second of that Town Hall Meeting, more than once. Westport can be proud of it’s elected representatives and citizens. They worked hard and were well prepared with facts. The town’s interests were represented . I happen to love that bridge and think this is a fantastic picture.

Let trucks get off exit 18 if they have to or exit 16 or go straight downtown if they have to get off exit 17!
I know this comment is going to make me very unpopular, but I would replace the bridge. I always found it too narrow while driving over it. I’m sure it could be made slightly wider. I know it would be destroying a little bit of “old Westport,” but I’d replace it. (I can still picture Nick Tiberio directing traffic, at the intersection, during rush hour.”
You’d replace it and get to share it with the trucks that could then use the Greens Farms connector, Greens Farms Road and Bridge St. as an I95 by pass. Would you also rename it after you so we could all remember who wished this destruction on us?

Maybe Nick Tiberio filled in,but that traffic was taken care of by my dad William Cribari for many many years.
Once upon a time I had a job in NYC and waited in the morning to cross what was then the Bridge Street Bridge (was the Bridge named after the street, or the street named after the bridge?). Watching Bill Cribari control traffic made the wait actually enjoyable. He was a cross between a ballet dancer and a matador (without any bulls being injured/killed). A very proper memorial to someone who obviously enjoyed his work. Leave the bridge alone.
The property for the one half mile long Bridge St. was given to the town by Chloe Allen on April 23, 1869 so the bridge could be built.

Where was this magnificent, yes, shot taken from? The train? A car? If so, it’s an even more magnificent accomplishment.
