This Old House #7

Our house identification project is getting tougher.

Last week’s house — the latest in a series asking “06880” readers for information on homes photographed by the WPA in the 1930s, prior to a Westport Historical Society exhibit — has not yet been positively identified. Click here to see that photo, then scroll down for comments and suggestions.

Here is this week’s house. Unlike the others, we have no clue to its location. There is just one word on the back: “Westport.”

This Old House 7

If you think you know where in Westport it stands — or stood; it may have been demolished — click “Comments” below.

    Compo beach ?

I believe this house might be on Prospect Rd

  3. Could that be an old-fashioned sleeping porch on the upstairs level?

  4. I think Fred’s right about the porch. We had one on a 1900 house in Groton MA and it was also above screened in porch.

  5. Prospect road

Hard to tell, but this doesn’t appear to be an exceptionally “old” structure. However, that covered porch situation could possibly be an addition to a more historically significant home.

But the front facade looks kindof 1960’s to me, and would appear even more so without that pergola-style entry decor. Just look at the window style, and the not-quite-federal-style take of the front. It’s like two single floor ranch homes, stacked up. Not quite Colonial, and not screaming any other particular style (to me) either.
Don’t know, but my gut says its a beach area home, Compo or Saugatuck Shores (or even Burrits Landing section, off Riverside).

I will happily eat crow if I’m way off on any of this!

Thanks Dan – these are so much fun!

I think you might be on to something with the house being in Burrits Landing off RT 136. Wendy Cusick

I meant to say AREA around Burrits Landing from the Saugatuck Railroad Station to the Norwalk Line. Duck Pond Road. Also all the side roads in the same area. There is a house with a 1st floor sleeping porch just over the Westport/Norwalk Line on RT 136.

Corner of Greens Farms Rd and Wake Robin Rd

  8. I took an extra “field trip” through Westport and the house is probably still standing just remodeled. The one on Prospect #10 is brick so I don’t think it’s that one. I drive by the Greens Farms Rd and Wake Robin corner all the time. It could have been that one before the remodel but I doubt it. Ms. Paulsen may be right about the house being in Burrits Landing off RT 136. Wendy Cusick

THIS WEEK’S HOUSE PICTURE ALTHOUGH SIMILAR TO THE GUNN HOUSE, MAY BE THE ONE AT THE CORNER OF RIVERSIDE AVENUE AND TREADWELL AVENUE. AT ONE TIME THE GUNN HOUSE WAS IN THAT CONDITION

the house that’s at the corner of riverside and treadwell is the above picture in dan’s blog.

      • Wendy Cusick

Another possibility is behind the Riverside and Treadwell house. The houses on Jonathan Ln.

I KNEW JONATHAN LANE VERY WELL GOING BACK TO THE 50’s. NO SUCH HOUSE THERE THEN . . . THE HOUSE AT THE TOP OF JONATHAN LANE (#7) WAS BUILT IN 1952 BY COLIN “BEN” GUNN AND HIS WIFE MARY. SHE WAS THE ARCHITECT. CHARLIE REMLIN SR WAS THE BUILDER. GOING IN TO JONATHAN LANE THE HOUSE ON THE RIGHT WAS OWNED BY BOB AND MAGGIE ROGERS, IT HAS SINCE BURNED DOWN. PROPERTY IS NOW OWNED BY A FORMER FIRST SELECTMAN JOE ARCUDI

@Beatus Wow Thanks for the history. I did know Maggie Rogers…She was quite a talented lady.

I’m almost thinking this might have been across the street from what was the Harrison’s house at Green’s Farms and Wake Robin. Before the Mcmansion development that is there now (which was built next to the trash transfer station) there were one or two houses there – and Mrs. Barrows the french teacher at Long Lots lived in one of them.

  11. A vague memory of an upstairs sleeping porch.
    Rosenfields? A beautiful house.

  12. I believe that house may be on Bradley Street. I use to babysit for a family who lived there. At that time it was painted yellow.
